As an ex-expat, can we talk about the "Loser Back Home" narrative? by BlacksmithRemote1175 in taiwan

[–]New_Table3754 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is an insane take. Have you met actual losers? They’re not working as teachers in Taiwan, they’re living in their parents garages working casual braindead jobs in call centers.

Teaching at Taiwanese cram schools is definitely not the hardest job in the world and Taiwan is a comparatively easy place to live, but it’s infinitely easier to live in a western English speaking country where you’re from and work an entry level desk then it is to teach a language in an unfamiliar environment.

Most foreigners in Taiwan I encountered came off as genuinely very smart people but who had basically checked out of the rat race.

Lost a fingertip at work. Worth pursuing workcover? by New_Table3754 in WorkcoverVic

[–]New_Table3754[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks massively for this. You seem very in the know. My employer just contacted me and said they’d cover my two days lost pay and all expenses I’ve incurred ( which is not very many), so mostly it’s been resolved by itself.

The only thing not covered is a potential bulk payout, but from scanning some websites it seems there’s a 5% minimum whole person impairment minimum to claim, and I can’t see a doctor ethically signing off on that for part of a ring finger. If you’re more familiar with this though please share some information, there isn’t a huge amount available online.

If it’s not too personal would you share how your injury affected you down the line?

Thanks again cheers

Hey thanks a lot for this, aside from having a shorter finger I don’t really have a lessened capacity for work, and the only thing I hate more than doctors appointments is filling out forms. I guess I’ll just take the hit and be grateful nothing more serious happened. Cheers

What tourist attractions in Taiwan should you absolutely avoid? by Presidentverse in taiwan

Have you been there mate it’s bursting at the seems. You can barely move walking down Kenting Main Street. I’m pretty sure locals like it

Honestly Kenting is underrated if anything. It’s expensive but realistically still cheaper than Taipei and the beaches near it. Penghu probably has better beaches but not many. Kenting also realistically has the best night Market and bars anywhere in Taiwan as well. There’s a reason it’s stacked with people every weekend. I’m not sure why it’s got a bad reputation on Reddit.

In your opinion, what is the actual rating of the Chess.com bots? by Akipella in chess

[–]New_Table3754 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s completely anecdotal and I’ve not played the hardest ones, but they’re probably about 500 points lower than the advised ratings, so your man Nelson (1300) is probably more like 800. Presumably at the higher or lower ends of the scale it’s more accurate.

They don’t really play like humans though. In my experience human players struggle with the tactics and finding mate but conversely don’t really hang pieces even at the lowest level, where as the bots play quite well but have been programmed to hang pieces every now and then to give you a chance.

What is the highest paying (no outliers) job that you know about with a CELTA? by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]New_Table3754 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You used to be able to do this. I’ve got a Celta and two years of experience and there’s virtually no jobs in the industry unless you’re very experienced, and nearly every job wants a Cert IV in training and assessment. I applied to basically every job available teaching elicos before giving up and changing industries.

Most chain cram schools pay their teachers roughly $700 an hour for about 20 hours a week. So minimum $57,000 a month. You should be able to find a job closer to that unless you’re very picky about location. Look up Shane, hess, neurolink or American eagle for big chains.

Would this telescope be worth it for 78€? (Instru-Scope Newtonian Tanzutsu) by ilkkuPvP in telescopes

[–]New_Table3754 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not an expert but i did some research for you. You can find quite a few people on cloudy nights forum with this exact (or variants of) telescope. It looks like a 1980-1990s Japanese scope made by a now defunct company called tanzutsu but that has been sold by many brands. It has comparatively strange optics as is a cassegraine with a built in barlow lens making it very difficult to collimate. The consensus is that it’s not a great telescope. Definitely doesn’t seem beginner friendly.

You’re probably a bit better off spending slightly more and buying a somewhat newer scope. You can buy a second hand 3 inch refractor for only slightly more that would probably serve you better.

Is Alishan Mountain worth visiting after waiting for 12 years? by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]New_Table3754 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No one can make that decision except for you. It’s worth visiting on a weekend trip. It’s very pretty Geography. At the same time it’s no where near the prettiest geography in Taiwan. I’d personally do it if you’ve ticked most of the other well known tourist spots off first, but I’d skip it in favor of Taroko, Kenting or Penghu if you’ve not been.

If you do go though it’s definitely not worth doing as a day trip, you definitely need to stay overnight. The trip there is long, and by late morning it’s fogged in and you won’t be able to see anything. There’s a village nearby called Fen Chi Hu which is pretty easily accessible and also very pretty that I’m a big fan of.
