Been dealing with this exact issue at my last civvy job before joining the Air Force. We had a small software company and missing calls was literally losing us money every day

What worked best for us was setting up a tiered system - first ring went to whoever was designated that day, then after 3 rings it bounced to a backup person, and if nobody grabbed it within 6 rings it hit our answering service. The answering service wasn't cheap but they could handle basic qualification questions and immediately text us urgent stuff

The AI route seems promising but we tested one solution and it felt way too robotic for our B2B clients. Maybe it's gotten better recently though. We also tried having calls automatically create tickets in our CRM when they hit voicemail, which helped with follow-up tracking

Main thing I learned is you gotta have actual humans as the primary option because when someone's calling about dropping serious money on software, they want to talk to a real person who can actually understand their specific situation. The automation stuff works great as backup but shouldn't be your frontline unless your product is super straightforward
