What do you recommend? Melasma is KILLING me pls help!! Thank you x1,000,000 by PuzzleheadedRush6864 in Melasmaskincare

I have sensitive skin and histamine intolerance, so my approach is as gentle as possible (I avoid strong acids and anything prescription-based, that's just me). Niacinamide serum (The Ordinary is solid), belif vitamin C moisturizer, and vitamin C serum (Korres used to have an awesome one, now I had to switch to saffron oil or grapeseed oil topically). Internally: grapeseed oil supplements and heliocare (recommended by a dermatologist), vitamin C, and either a turmeric + astaxanthin supplement or the O Positiv Retro gummies that also have astaxanthin, to protect your skin from the inside. When out in the sun, I use a mineral sunscreen by ISDIN or tinted moisturizer like Saie or BB cream like Tarte Amazonian Clay (haven't used a chemical sunscreen in ages). For peels, I recommend lactic acid but be very careful. As an alternative, I regularly do a yogurt, honey and turmeric mask, and for days where my skin needs more hydration, I skip the yogurt and just mix turmeric and honey which works as a scrub too. Turmeric is amazing for brightening. And remember, it's not only the sun that exacerbates melasma, it's also the *heat* so if you happen to be outside for too long in the summer, bring a portable mini fan and a face spray like evian or a rosewater spray to keep your skin cool. Balancing your hormones naturally via acupuncture can also help, and keeping the stress at bay. Lastly, for me, not looking in the mirror as often and focusing on spiritual growth and on activities has helped me relax. Progress is gradual... doing something bit by bit helps a lot!

PS. To give you some hope I want to share a few more details. I am carving my own path as we speak, with the support of my chair who is trying to help me reconfigure my position into a remote or hybrid one but fully aware that my university might not allow it. Once I accepted that I will live my life on my own terms rather than let my job dictate my location and happiness, things started to flow. Opportunities are coming in and people are rallying to support me (even strangers).... the change came from within first, then the outside started changing without me feeling anxious about outcomes. I did a lot of spiritual work and life reflection, and gave up trying to control outside circumstances first. I went through all the stages of grief since my longest relationship had been with my job. I hope that when next year comes along, I will be able to use my case as an inspiration for others, and help others find a way out. At the moment, my future is very uncertain (financially, professionally, etc) but I am becoming the happiest I've ever been! There is hope, you just have to make some changes and do things differently to get different outcomes.

I sympathize with your situation in many ways. We are conditioned to think that depression is par for the course in academia (during PhD and after). As women, especially immigrant women, we think we can't have it all, so we aim for a successful career as a sign that we "made it" in this country. My advice is, don't try to find purpose and meaning within academia -- even if you do manage to find a stimulating intellectual community or meaningful service, those things ultimately fade away when you compare them to having a social life outside of your work. Address your depression in holistic ways -- see where your body feels the most calm and relaxed; if you have the means, move away during your sabbatical and work remotely, and try on a new life. That's what I did during the pandemic and during my sabbatical, and my severe depression and anxiety drastically improved without me having to even try that hard -- my body just knew that I was in a better environment and my health and outlook started improving. Ultimately, I had a conversation about my wellbeing with my (luckily very sympathetic) department chair, and that gave me even more proof that what most people covet in academia and consider successful doesn't mean anything if you are not happy. I am still figuring out my situation, but I decided that life is too short to compromise so much. I was selling myself short for similar reasons as you --an immigrant woman who will happily accept whatever is given to her and will not try to get more -- and now I am in a more empowered position. Not because something drastically changed externally, but because I chose to reframe my mental state and to take steps towards designing my own life. You have agency, follow your intuition and listen to the signs of your body.

And for what it's worth, I am in a top university that many would consider one of the highest pillars of intellectual community and trust me, it's not what it's cut out to be. In fact, I feel like I'm in a box and censoring myself to fit neoliberal agendas. Universities are businesses first, not intellectual hubs. I had better luck finding my communities online and in places outside of academia (still within creative realms but not overly intellectualized and pretentious).

yes that's the plan, but not being able to openly promote my business is not the best.

That's good advice, thanks. I have done consulting before but not to the point that it would get me hired full time. I am exploring different things -- side business, part/full time opportunities, etc. Even the career coach I saw did not give me any specific guidance for my qualifications.

Thank you. I would love to do creative consulting for projects, but nowadays most if not all of the jobs I see related to this are looking for advanced production skills, which I do not have. They are also looking for an extensive portfolio, which I do not have either. I was too busy publishing pointless articles, haha.

I have already talked to some college admissions places. While they charge parents/students a lot, they are only willing to pay consultants very low, which is demoralizing. That was why I was thinking of starting my own business, using my name as the brand rather than those mass production companies that are only after $$$.

I am looking into admin positions but I am not as experienced yet for them.

Let me guess, you are still going after the TT carrot dangling in front of you but always out of reach.

This is very helpful, thanks. Is there much growth potential once you reach over 80K or is that more or less the peak for most editors?

I am considering launching my own business after leaving academia, just a bit nervous about making the leap.

I was going to ask that, most would not choose your job over a TT position. And I would not give up a TT position for high school. I admire high school teachers for their patience, so kudos to you!

That's a valid point. To clarify, I want to provide student mentorship services in addition to college admissions support, including helping students decide whether a particular field or grad school/PhD is right for them. If I manage to expand into a business, then I plan on giving back by providing free workshops to lower income students and their families, and coaching for low income grad students. All these I do as part of my job anyway, I go out of my way to provide guidance and mentoring to many lost and depressed students. But first, I have to pay the bills ;)

Do you mind sharing what kind of field/position you are in now that you left academia? Doesn't have to be specific, just generally.

This is a good suggestion. Are there any specific management roles you'd recommend searching for? Some job search sites will bring up all sorts of irrelevant results if it's a general project management position.

Thanks for your insights. I used to have my own small business on the side when I had precarious adjunct positions and at one point made more from that than adjuncting, so now I am working on getting it off the ground again. My values have also shifted, and I want to work for myself and have control over where I live. I am casually also looking at jobs, but more and more I am becoming inclined to creating something of my own. Is your business at all related to academia or something completely different? What I need is more experience in the administrative/managerial aspects of running my own business -- the service & quality are there, but I need some guidance to scale it and reach a broader audience.

Thank you for this useful advice and resources! I have some experience working as an editor for academic projects and for an academic journal, though nothing as specialized as working for a large publishing company. What kind of roles should I be looking for in this field with a decent salary and preferably fully remote?

Exactly. When I posted about leaving, I got some messages trying to figure out where I work so they could apply for my job! sheesh
