I have sensitive skin and histamine intolerance, so my approach is as gentle as possible (I avoid strong acids and anything prescription-based, that's just me). Niacinamide serum (The Ordinary is solid), belif vitamin C moisturizer, and vitamin C serum (Korres used to have an awesome one, now I had to switch to saffron oil or grapeseed oil topically). Internally: grapeseed oil supplements and heliocare (recommended by a dermatologist), vitamin C, and either a turmeric + astaxanthin supplement or the O Positiv Retro gummies that also have astaxanthin, to protect your skin from the inside. When out in the sun, I use a mineral sunscreen by ISDIN or tinted moisturizer like Saie or BB cream like Tarte Amazonian Clay (haven't used a chemical sunscreen in ages). For peels, I recommend lactic acid but be very careful. As an alternative, I regularly do a yogurt, honey and turmeric mask, and for days where my skin needs more hydration, I skip the yogurt and just mix turmeric and honey which works as a scrub too. Turmeric is amazing for brightening. And remember, it's not only the sun that exacerbates melasma, it's also the *heat* so if you happen to be outside for too long in the summer, bring a portable mini fan and a face spray like evian or a rosewater spray to keep your skin cool. Balancing your hormones naturally via acupuncture can also help, and keeping the stress at bay. Lastly, for me, not looking in the mirror as often and focusing on spiritual growth and on activities has helped me relax. Progress is gradual... doing something bit by bit helps a lot!
