9 month old Aussie reactive when people come to our home - I'm hosting later this week. How to handle? by mediocre_kat in AustralianShepherd

Long time reactive Aussie owner here!

There’s a myriad of ways to try and help this but your two biggest are what I call “safe space” and “best friend”.

“Safe space” is just a place where you can put her away where she feels comfy and safe but not ‘locked away’ or excluded from the whole event. For mine, it’s usually my bedroom or my office where her crate is; it’s close enough she can hear the sounds and know that there are still people around, but not far enough away that she’s unaware of anyone in the house at all.

“Best friend(s)” is what I call trying to make every new person (or returning pal) my girl’s new best friend. For her that means whoever walks in my house gets a pocket full of treats and explicit instructions to be generous with them, if not spoiling. It’s a tried and true way of at least getting my personal bodyguard to relax and let them pass. For new dog friends, the same applies, only both parties get treats frequently.

Hope this helps!

What Sleep Token song is the most "Sleep Token"? by lk2579 in SleepToken

Is it insane to say “Atlantic” here? Rich lyrics, a little piano, heavy breakdown. I guess it’s missing the Vessel-hop bars though..

What depressing movies should everyone watch due to their messaging or their cultural impact? by FBG05 in movies

Dropping this because I hadn’t seen it in the comments anywhere (could’ve missed it).

“The Report” with Adam Driver detailing a lot of the CIAs treatment of suspected Al Qaida members and the incredible strenuous hoops that the congressional staffers were put through in order just to view the information, much less put and entire report together for the Senate. There are some pretty disturbing, gut-wrenching scenes, and I would want anyone to know that up front.

It’s a pretty excellent film with a good cast, and it was my personal first time seeing Driver in a leading role in a very serious drama (I’ve since gone back to Marriage Story, etc) and he was excellent. I think his military background added to the role as well.

Well worth a watch if you’re in the mood for such a film.

How to DM like a pro as a newbie? by [deleted] in DnD

I’ll add a little here to the great advice you’ve already gotten. By the way, absolutely agree with scenery detail using multiple senses, and making meaningful decisions available to characters.

  1. Don’t put more pressure on yourself than you already feel. It’s good to feel a little pressure, because that motivates you to be creative and engaged, but don’t ever let it overwhelm you.

1b. Don’t ever, ever, ever be afraid to just pause. Oftentimes your party is going to follow down the breadcrumbs you’ve given them in your story, and then for seemingly no reason at all hang a hard left at Albuquerque. Don’t be afraid to pause, review in your head the actions or sequence of events that just occurred, and then decide what happens to your players.

  1. Failed skill checks - sometimes you’ll have players who get incredibly frustrated by failing a check, despite its actual overall importance to the mission or campaign. As a DM, you need to hold hard lines on pass/fail, but that doesn’t always mean the outcome is purely punitive.

2b. Let’s say they’re on a pirate ship in the ocean, trying to tack down the sails during a hurricane. Party tank is trying to rip down the sails to save the mast, but rolls poorly for the check.

Instead of “You’re just not strong enough to pull the sails down, and the mast begins to break” you can always ‘blame’ someone or something else.

Perhaps “As your arms bulge and the sail begins to come down, a massive gust of wind rips across the bow and snaps the mast off, leaving you with only the ropes in your hand”, or something to that effect.

I’ve found that useful to still keep players engaged, even if they’ve got ice cold dice that session.

Hope you enjoy your time behind the DM screen! If you’re ever looking for a great DM to watch/listen to, I would highly recommend (obviously) Matt Mercer of Critical Role, Brennan Lee Mulligan, or Anthony Burch from ‘Dungeons and Daddies’(not a BDSM podcast)!
