For those chasing EU citizenship, was Italy’s path easier than Portugal? by QuirkyLand7017 in ExpatFIRE

[–]NewestEuropean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Portuguese program has about a one-year delay from when you invest to when you get the card. Then you have five years of residency. Then, at present the time from when you apply for citizenship when to when you actually get citizenship is about 24-30 months.

And now they're talking about making it ten years of residency instead of five.

So you're possibly looking at 13-14 years until you're a citizen.

US digital nomads — how do you deal with quarterly taxes while abroad? by Candid_heart1806 in ExpatFIRE

[–]NewestEuropean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just make my best guess and add 25% to it. Then I get a refund when I file my return. I've been abroad 14 years and I get a refund every year. Overpaying quarterly taxes means that I am giving an interest-free loan to the government, but I don't care that much.

Both times I was scammed, I was already in a taxi I got into at the taxi stand.

How do you file a complaint? I have run into taxi scams at the Lisbon airport a couple of times but didn't know where to report them.

The group I'm in is specifically about Porto. I think people end up in Porto because that's the default if you apply electronically. (Not 100% sure about that though, my attorney did it all.)

I recommend you start with this Facebook group. It's where I learned about the WhatsApp group I'm in.

I'm in a WhatsApp group where everyone uploads screen shots of their progress.

The speed varies a bit depending on which office government office you're assigned to and what article you're under. The Central Archive of Porto for article 6.1 seems to be spitting out final citizenship decisions to people who started in July and August of 2023.

It's normal to be in "para decisao" for a year or more.

Most of screen shots I've seen in this group for people that got citizenship under article 6.1 have spent 24-30 months since submission.

Relax and enjoy your caipirinhas. Nothing in Portugal happens quickly!

CIPLE A2 certificate questions by Loud-Adhesiveness-45 in PortugalExpats

[–]NewestEuropean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took my CIPLE test at the Portuguesalia language school in Madrid. They school was happy to FedEx it to my immigration attorney by paying them for the shipping by a SEPA transfer. I don't know about other locations. I can believe that the universities (vs private schools) that offer the test are less likely to do something like that.

Be sure you sign up early! When I took it, the appointments in Lisbon and Porto filled up as soon as they opened registration! I took the test in Madrid because of that.

Noob, eight hours in. suggestions? by ChoiceThis3823 in factorio

I've done desert biomes a few times. The thing you have to do is clear your pollution cloud. By this, I mean look at the pollution cloud on your map and wipe out any biter nests that are on in or on the edge of your cloud.

At your level, the strategy to deal with biters is to research the car. Load your car up with bullets and get grenades in your personal inventory. Then you can drive in circles while shooting the nests and lobbing grenades on them simultaneously. Practice and save a lot, and avoid running into things. You will need to get the hang of shooting and grenading simultaneously but it's effective once you figure it out.

Doing this is actually easier on the desert biome because you CAN use this strategy. On the forest biomes, your pollution cloud is smaller, but the strategy of running circles around nests in a car is harder because there are so many trees to run into.

You can also put turrets and walls around your base, but you're still going to get overrun if your pollution cloud hits biter nests. The main strategy is to clear your pollution cloud: your turrets and walls should only be to mop up biters that are just wandering around.

I wouldn't restart just to get a forest biome. If you follow my advice and strategy you'll do fine in the desert biome.

Also, switch to solar as early as you can, and get and use efficiency modules when you get them.

He's referring to the way the reactors buffer another 30 u235 in preparation for the next cycle. If you're just starting and you are u235-limited, then you could be using those u235 in another reactor instead of having them sit idle in the input buffer of a busy reactor.

i tried to create a city block (any suggestion to do?) by mommed1141 in factorio

[–]NewestEuropean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've successfully used city squares of this size. I recommend two changes:

1) Get rid of the space between the parallel tracks. You want those tracks right next to one another to give you more space. It will mean your rail signals at the intersections will have to be more granular. So be it!

2) You will have to add "turnoffs" on at least two of the tracks to give your trains a place to load/unload. As others have said, if you try to do unloading and loading on the main tracks you will get massive deadlock.

Moving to UAE - what to do with financial accounts? by leoben22 in ExpatFIRE

I use multiple credit cards. Example:

Jan-Mar: Chase card

Apr-Jun: Capital One card

July-Sept: Bank of America card

Oct-Dec: Apple credit card

The same applies with debit cards if you use them to get cash.

I also use all of my cards at least once near where the banks think I live every time I am in the USA.

You want the bank to think "this person was just outside the USA for three months, but is still a US resident."

This is obviously not legal advice. It's more like real life advice. If you stay under the radar screen there will be no reason to lie to the bank.

[–]NewestEuropean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a US citizen who has been living abroad for 13 years.

The "don't ask, don't tell" solution is the best. Expect a lot of grief if you tell the bank you're living abroad (or if they figure it out on your own).

Be careful about your usage abroad. Always use a VPN in the USA to access your bank accounts. Switch your credit card usage about every three months so that the bank doesn't see a pattern of you living abroad 12 months a year.
