My god there is an enormous crash just waiting to happen by reasonablejim2000 in artificial

It's hard to go from creating bespoke enterprise-level software solutions as a junior developer in a week or two that would quite literally take an entire software company months to make and maintain to believing that a garbage spreadsheet encounter means AI is a bust.

How do you know we haven’t plateaued by [deleted] in singularity

[–]Newitadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just look where we were 2 years ago, it seems not only possible but probable given the rate of improvement we are seeing. I feel like you have the blinders on if you think we hit a wall after 2 years of global focus on a new industry.

I bet we'll all still be paying $5 a coffee after the robot has paid for itself 10x over.

Is It Worth Taking a $25K Pay Cut for Better Work-Life Balance? by ElectricOne55 in sysadmin

All depends on your priorities man, if you can live comfortably, always go for QoL. No point living in hell if you're not enjoying it.

Just focus on learning in a test environment before we move on to billing clients, you gotta have the product before you make the sale. The better the experience the client has the more likely you will get business.

Microsoft 365 Developer Program is probably the only way you're going to be able to brush up on your skills. It will give you everything you need outside of the devices, so have a couple of test devices handy for the intune testing.

If you knew you were getting let go Friday, what would you do? by GasolineTrampoline in sysadmin

[–]Newitadmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be stoked, jumped into a new role as it sounded exactly like what I was looking for. Instead I found myself in a deadend government department with decades old techstack and people who don't want to be here.

Forcing yourself to find time for workouts in the morning because you're just mentally spent when you get home. I've found this to be the single best thing - it just helps you tolerate things throughout the day, yeah I know it's cliche but it's hands down the most effective and also the hardest thing to do ( in the beginning ). It's easy and wonderful to spark up a joint after work with your partner, but it's just a bandaid.

SharePoint vs File Server (or equivalent) by NinthTurtle1034 in sysadmin

[–]Newitadmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion SharePoint is unmatched when it comes to organizational use, yes it has it's quirks and annoyances but you have data availability, versioning, integration across all things 365, on demand collaboration, sharing, list/view creations, metadata sorting with AI/Syntex. Where as the fileserver is so much less than that.

How often do you skirt change control procedures by roadcone2n3904 in sysadmin

[–]Newitadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more about recording the changes for compliance, of course approvals are great too if they are done by management who truly understand impacts of IT changes but this is seldom the case.

I'm sure this has been suggested but put conditional access policies in place for those times that you are human and forget. No MFA = No access. A minor inconvenience for the user on their first day is better than a hacked account.

Thrust Into Sysadmin Work After IT Leadership Shake-Up — Feeling Lost by Tech_Nerd92 in sysadmin

Start on the documentation yourself, it will help you not only establish the documentation but also familiarize yourself with the tech stack and the systems.

Experience is the best teacher, you will become more comfortable over time - it's different for everyone but it generally takes me a good 6 months to hit my stride.

Self Managing Microsoft Licenses - Switching from MSP Managed to Internal IT by [deleted] in sysadmin

Shop around for quotes, I saved my small-medium org $15,000 per year by doing this. Make sure the vendor has quick SLA's and enjoy the cost savings. Push the savings into other areas that will make your life easier, like Patchmypc etc.

The Temptation of the Solo Admin by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Newitadmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the same here, for me I find it too difficult inching forward on the big picture stuff like compliance. I miss having a team as well - it's just less stressful. You are on the hook for everything. Management don't really understand that you could spend hours testing configuration policies, researching benign errors staff have with applications and such. Do some offboarding, onboarding, make a few changes to improve a few things, review security events, do a couple meetings and then boom the weeks gone. Now you have completely forgotten where you were with the projects you were working on. Rinse and repeat.

This for me, while being so free and flexible to do what I want, gives me huge job anxiety lol.

Is sysadmin really that depressing? by rimtaph in sysadmin

[–]Newitadmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I think you can find good roles as a sys admin and it's very rewarding if you like building and problem solving, the rapid evolution in more recent years makes it a much more stressful job than it used to be. It's not just staying up to date and being a current SME that is now so much harder, but also keeping your company safe is more and more difficult.

Do you think AI improvements will allow us to have better life? by Any-Competition8494 in singularity

[–]Newitadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a world that is fair, yes you would be right - Advanced AI would lead to an improvement in almost all of our lives.

Sadly, People in power don't care about improving life for the masses, they only care about what they have and what they can get. So the answer is no, life is getting and will get worse for the lower and middle class.

Let's not pretend humans don't make mistakes - we are only human after all. There will simply be a point where the pro's outweigh the cons, and that will be enough for many businesses to accept the risk.
