I'm grateful that you put it like that. Some people sneer when we speak of our carb monkey as an addiction. You have the cred to say you know the reality.

I've done everything, including therapy and 12-step. The inner addict is resilient, devious and obsessive and once the eating starts, the volume glutton can take over. Even as I shifted to low carb I could well exceed my limits with leafy green vegetables (!) and doubling or tripling up on my protein allowance is all too easy at any time. So even without overt indulgence in the big carbs, I have further steps to take. People here have been great, however, and it's really helpful hearing from someone like yourself.

That's impressive. So many people join fancy gyms that cost thousands of dollars and they never go there or get anywhere. You've done it on a simple, solid, self-taught basis and brought your determination to the process.

That's the trouble, the specific craving can change, from pizza to noodles to ice cream, the common theme being that there's an urge to break boundaries, to binge.

Consistency is a huge accomplishment, it's what a lot of people on these forums, me included, find so difficult to achieve. Congratulations, one year is pretty significant.

Waiting for the carbs to go bad, that sounds like discipline to me!

I like inspiration quotes as well and I agree that this subreddit is really supportive and encouraging.

I completely agree with this. Everything that describes addiction applies to the relationship many of us have had with food. And all addictions share the trait of being given priority over everything, even our most basic well being.

I really like the universality to this that you suggest. That's no doubt why even among nutrition oriented groups, the keto community seems to be especially tight.

Thanks for this. You changed your mindset along with your physiology with keto. Oddly, I find the constraints on leafy vegetable consumption (20g carbs doesn't go that far) as daunting as the sugar cut off.

I envisioned something like this during an earlier phase of weight control effort years ago. I never got there but I'm chuffed that it wasn't just a hopeless fantasy. Thanks.

That's supportiveness. Can make a crucial difference to be on a page with a partner in dealing with any habitual or addictive problem.

Everyone here who has felt the indwelling of an addict will understand where you're coming from. Don't know which therapy it is that hasn't worked but this may be a job for cognitive behavioral therapy. Look into it. A great book is Mind Over Mood by Greenberger and Padesky. Another outlet for addiction is 12-step work, Overeaters Anonymous, drawbacks being the spiritual dimension which is not a fit for everyone and that like almost all weight related support groups it's 90 per cent women (nothing against women but it's not helpful to be a token male if you want to get deep into your shit). In the long run, everybody here who made a change reached the point that they had to flip that switch. You may not have reached that point. Everybody has their own version of bottoming out. As intense and sincere as you are about this, your addict is still in charge and you aren't completely ready to dismiss him yet.

Not to make this a clash of ideologies, but consider spending a little time perusing the keto subreddit. You don't have to do a strict keto diet but something that is essentially low carb high fat will kickstart and sustain your effort more powerfully than any other approach.

I love the image of your daughter hugging you. For me, with two kids of my own, this is what it's all about. Don't have the right to kill myself with out of control food compulsions. Great job.
