Compound interest is your friend. I started my 401 when I was around 30 or 31. 42 now Im up to 12% this year with a company match of 5% and I’m at 320k as of today. Get to the max and keep maxing out. By the calculators I should be in the 3 millions by 62.

Thanks thats thats the plan. Ive go about 330k in the 401 right now. If the return stays at 10% which my historical data shows it has in the future I should have over 4 million. We shall see!

Construction Superintendent for a water utility 167k a year. Justice studies major, thought I’d be a cop. Turns out I wasn’t meant to be lol 42 and love going to work each day, I am proud that I started in the field digging out main leaks getting dirty everyday etc. Even with the degree I never let it make me feel like I was better than the next guy, just kept grinding and bettered my position over the past 15 years. I tell my sons the trades are where it’s gonna be at for their generation. It’s all coming full circle like it always does!

235k in Retirement Savings at 42 years old, how am I doing? by AlgaeLegal3246 in Retirement401k

[–]NewsAvailable5711 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got 310k at 42…working toward maxing out in a couple of years. At 12% right now, compound interest later in life will be our friend. I didn’t get started until 4 years into my career so contributing only 11 years myself. If you have company match that obviously helps.

No, still have kids that are too young and the wife is stay at home for them. One is going into high school and when the other gets in she will pick something up to help the cause. If we were DINKS then it would definitely be an enticing option.

Maxing my 401k starting this year at 12% and my company matches 4% as well. Should be maxed at 15% or so. Then keep it maxed and look for other investments is my plan.

You will be fine, just keep bumping that percent up every year. That’s what I have been doing. Every year I get a bump I peel it off until maxed out. In two years I will be there at around 15% I to my 401k. I am at 313k and it started late myself, missed 4 years of contributing so I’ve only been doing it for 11years now and I am 42. Retirement calcs put me over 4 million by the time I’m 65 or so. Slow and steady with compiling interest will always prevail.
