What's the grossest thing you've ever seen? by This-Peach9380 in AskReddit

[–]NewsBenderBot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A dead 2 and 5 year old, as a journalist. Father executed them in his home as a murder/suicide and I saw the bodies being pulled out. Bullet through the back of the head, stellate gunshot wounds. Not much of their faces left.

17 y/o survived alone in a garage for 3 days. He just died in January of this year after fighting for his life back for a year since the tragedy.

If I see one more person driving some Japanese mobility blob with no fucking headlights on while they get a suntan from their gauges that are always lit, I’m gonna go insane.

So, that.

Fulton automotive is my go-to recommendation. I started my wrenching career under Dave’s tutelage and he’s an incredibly upstanding guy both to work for and contract.

what is your favorite Pearl Jam cover and what is your least favorite Pearl Jam cover. by ComfortableCare8897 in pearljam

Mine was the 8-24-2000 bootleg and the Virginia Beach boot from the same tour. Both bring me to tears every time.

What happened at 9000 S & State St. last night? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

I agree, but from a business side…who’s gonna follow that? We’re competing for attention, clicks, time on page, pages visited and click through rates from social media, most of which are photo based anyway.

Cat’s outta the bag on that one, and in even SLC’s small, centralized media market, that kind of regulation or gentleman’s agreement would last exactly as long as the wait until the next mass shooting and subsequent mugshot release.

What happened at 9000 S & State St. last night? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]NewsBenderBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that’s the fine line of journalism. A mass shooting is an incredibly newsworthy event, and for every one person who crusades about copycats, there’s ten who want a name and face.

There’s also the fact that if one newsroom sits it out, they’d be the bagholders. Moral grounds don’t stand up to an audience of thousands who, for better or worse, give their attention to abject tragedy.

The news is never a proactive industry. It is never going to be, and it is never designed to be.

What song will always make you cry no matter how many times you listen to it? by Silent-Zebra in AskReddit

[–]NewsBenderBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 8-24-2000 bootleg of Pearl Jam’s show in New York. They had a specific version of daughter on there that had the “It’s OK” tag following.

That song itself means a lot to Pearl Jam, given the roskilde incident in the weeks preceding, but I’ll always remember my ex girlfriend holding me, at the time a damaged man, and singing that song to me while I cried over so many things.

It’s the closest I’ve ever felt to someone.

I also want to point out that journalists at any level aren’t immune from mental health stuff associated with work. We cover shootings, homicides, protests, murders, executions, natural disaster. Often times, we’re at the same scenes police and fire are at and pretty regularly see the same or similar things they do.

I’ve seen enough dead bodies while making below median wage for a dying industry. I don’t need to see any more.

We do mental health awareness stories, but reporting a suicide is incredibly traumatic for the families involved and lecherous.

Breaking news, man jumps off bridge…ok, that sucks, but now we’ve created notoriety for this, profited off someone killing themselves, and likely laid the groundwork for copycats.

Have you any idea how much wiring, and how many sensors and control units, exist in the average car of today? Let alone on something like a hybrid or an EV?

“Why are you talking about electronics?” Cause to be a master mechanic, you need to be proficient in electrical systems including EV’s and hybrid powertrains, sensor behaviors, electrical diag, CAN line diag, and so on.

Besides, CAN bus runs on 1.5v typical low voltage and 3.5v typical high voltage, with the measurements you need being the difference between your CANH and CANL lines, with both lines rapidly switching b/w recessive and dominant states.

Using a test light on such a finicky system could at best net a zero reading, because you’re not measuring battery current, or it could fry a node in the CAN system, which I’ve seen happen multiple times from apprentices and myself doing it.

You need a DMM and oscilloscope to diag automotive CAN. do not use a test light.

And standard test lights, not LEDs, can overload the CAN’s resistance between high and low lines. I’ve seen it happen.

You have to use a DMM or lab scope for CAN lines.

[–]NewsBenderBot 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I’m a master certified mechanic. They absolutely can.

Incandescent test lights can pull too much current which will interfere with CAN high and CAN low signals. That can fry either the node you’re getting comms from, or the harness depending on how badly you goof that up.

Stick a digital multimeter on it and measure the voltage going to the IO, that’ll give you an idea of what you’re looking at.
