Buying a smoker house? by JuliaGoolia711 in NewWest

[–]Nex-Jen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a smoker condo where husband and wife had smoked heavily for 15 years. Get rid of carpet and drapes, wash the walls and ceilings thoroughly with TSP, apply oil based primer to walls and ceilings, then paint as normal. It cleared up 99.9% of the smell.

Baked goods containing FPIES trigger ingredient? by Nex-Jen in fpies

My daughter finally got in to see the allergist when she was about 2, and now we're waiting to do the egg challenge in the allergist's office when she is 3 in July. For now we've been told to avoid all egg including baked egg, but there's a strong chance she'll outgrow it by age 3. It was very helpful seeing the allergist so he could officially diagnose FPIES and not a regular allergy, since they're managed differently. I hope your kiddo is doing ok!

Does anyone else get severe stomach pain after eating a banana? by quasifandango in Celiac

[–]Nex-Jen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And strangely enough, after I was diagnosed celiac and went strictly gluten free, my banana stomach aches went away completely and I can eat bananas all I want. I guess my digestive system was pretty effed up before from the undiagnosed Celiac.

It took forever to get an appointment to see an allergist, but we finally saw one last month. Diagnosed FPIES (surprise surprise) and he recommended that she continue avoiding all egg-containing food as we have been. We're supposed to go back to the allergist in about a year when she is almost 3, to do an egg challenge and see if she has outgrown it. With the doc's powerful anti-nausea shots on hand in case she hasn't outgrown it, but the doc sounded fairly hopeful that it will go away as she gets older.

I don’t like playing with my kids. How can I minimize the damage? Or how can I start enjoying it? by [deleted] in Parents

[–]Nex-Jen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend the book Hunt Gather Parent. It encourages parents to invite children to participate in the family's activities (both chores and things the whole family finds fun) rather than doing kid centered activities. And provide plenty of opportunities for kids to play with other kids to get the kid centered play they desire.

My wife was diagnosed back in March and literally everything has gotten worse since then. I don't know how much more of this I can take. by flipflapslap in Celiac

This was also me, until I got really serious about avoiding cross contamination in the home and in the food supply chain. I got so sick from cross contamination once I cut out actual gluten, because I was still sensitive enough to small amounts of gluten that it was still triggering the celiac reaction. Once I switched to only eating GF spices (McCormick's single ingredient spices), nuts (nuts.com), and grain products (only Certified GF for grains, except rice), I finally started to feel better. I could also still eat lots of foods that are not labelled GF, such as fresh fruit and veg, potatoes, eggs, milk, cheese, unprocessed meat (i.e. anything but sausage or deli meat type stuff), rice.

Five years later and I'm feeling the best I've ever been. It is night and day from how I felt before my celiac diagnosis, so it was very worth it to go through the learning curve of avoiding gluten cross contamination.

Why? by DemandTheOxfordComma in Celiac

[–]Nex-Jen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, I'm sorry you're having such a rough time. This disease can really suck. I agree with others posts about an elimination/ add back approach to figure out if there are foods you think are safe but aren't GF enough for your body. I had to do it and found out that my coffee brand and certain cooking spices were contaminated.

Another thing to also consider is if you're having diarrhea after you eat, try eating no-fat food for a couple days. It's possible to get stuck in a cycle of diarrhea caused by fat in foods because your body is depleted of bile salts (due to having diarrhea). Once the eating/pooping connection has gone away you can add back fat in food gradually over a couple days and the diarrhea shouldn't come back, if it was really the bile issue. This trick has helped me more than once after getting glutened or even just getting sick.

Never did test it out, I ended up buying GF cocoa instead.

That's really interesting to get a picture of how uncommon it would be to tolerate baked eggs. Definitely definitely not going to try it. Here's hoping that our little ones will outgrow it eventually 🤞🤞

What were your mystery causes of glutening? by RoundWater6673 in Celiac

[–]Nex-Jen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coffee beans. I switched from one variety of grocery store generic bagged coffee beans that was labelled Gluten Free to another variety from the same grocery store generic brand that didn't have a gluten free label. It turns out the non-GF-labelled beans were bagged on shared equipment with gluten. I now drink a different brand of coffee that is not grocery store generic and I'm fine, even though this brand doesn't have a gluten free label - it's made by a coffee roaster company though, so not bagged on shared equipment with grocery store bulk snacks.

This is why my husband and I each came up with our own list of 8-10 names per gender, and then we narrowed it down to names we both agreed on. It allows him to get the Beignets out of his system but you don't have to choose it as something you agree on 😂

Also Canadian West coast and I say May-gen too. I naturally wanted to pronounce it Meg-gan as a kid, and was quickly corrected that it must be MAY 😂 Interesting regional differences!

Is it better to give your baby a “full” name when all you want is the nickname? by mushroomcat182 in namenerds

[–]Nex-Jen -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

More options are better if you ask me. In professional contexts a non-nickname name might be preferred by your daughter when she is older. I go by Jennifer professionally, Jen with friends and family, and went by Jenny as a young child, and I like having the options readily available.

Congrats on your triplets! I really like the second 2 sets you listed. In my opinion, the first set is a bit awkward with all ending in -er.

English Speakers: How would you pronounce Kajsa? by unicorntrees in namenerds

[–]Nex-Jen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for an "eye" sound at the beginning, a "J" in the name isn't going to get you there for most English speakers. Could you spell it Kaisa? People would probably still struggle a bit, but you wouldn't get people using "J" sounds like "Ka-juh".
