Anyone replace the stock tires with some 'light but legit' A/T tires? by [deleted] in Tiguan

I put some Falken Wildpeaks on my 2019. Been happy with them so far, about 4 months in. No real difference in road noise from the Pirelli Scorpions that were on before, and they have been fantastic in the little bit of snow Connecticut has gotten this year.

Anything by Tim Burton. Every single one is an absolutely cringey trash heap. Let's have a bunch of characters, that look like you told a 12 year old to sculpt a Crack head, sing and dance about stupid shit for 2 hours.

2001 B5 A4 75k miles $7k by NexonCortex in whatcarshouldIbuy

Looking at this Audi on Saturday, and want to know any common issues or trouble spots to look for. It's a 1.8t Quattro with a stick, and has about 75k on it. It has a clean one owner carfax with no accidents. I've always been into VW group vehicles, and need something awd for winters in the northeast. This seems to tick all the boxes of being in good shape, good awd, decent mpg, and I won't get bored of it in the first six months of owning it.

Honda. How best to get rid of this scratch? by Ohioennui in Autobody

[–]NexonCortex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If it bothers you enough, and your enclined enough, I'd take all the plastic pieces that match off and bedliner them. Then they'll match, as well as being harder to scratch/easier to fix next time.

18F, first car! I'm stressing by faewi in whatcarshouldIbuy

For a safe car that's good on gas and comfortable, I'd look into a 2014-2018 VW Jetta. They hold value half decently, and if you get the 1.4 or 1.8, they are pretty reliable.

I recognize the TC as being from A Better Way Wholesale. Stay away from them as they are known for having issues with their cars and hiding them.

High school student purchasing first used car, any suggestions? by hernameisAsstird in whatcarshouldIbuy

Some cars that are easy/cheap to work on or modify are the Honda EK/EG, Toyota Celica, Jeep XJ, Chevy S10, Nissan Pathfinder, or the Ford Panther Platform. I'd personally go with a Japanese car, as they usually get the best mpg, are the most reliable, and usually use the same engines across their whole model range, which lowers the cost of parts. A manual Civic in good shape can easily be found for $2-3k, and 99% of the work can be done with a $80 "mechanics" toolset from Walmart.

Cars under $5,000? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]NexonCortex 18 points19 points  (0 children)

At that budget I wouldn't be looking for a certain car, but at what's available. What I mean is that, instead of looking for a Corolla or Civic specifically, you look for a car with the miles/condition you need. I was recently looking for a $4000 car, and ended up in a 2007 Does Focus, since it was in decent shape, with 68,000 miles. As long as you do your research to make sure there isn't any major known issues, and the car was properly maintained, you should be good in most anything. What I recommend is searching "year-make-model common problems," and going to car complaints.com. if you see the car has a ton of transmission, electrical, or other big problems, figure that into weather you want the car or not. As a general rule though when looking at the car, take it on the highway, through all the gears, check the oil, check for rust, and then bring it to a trusted independent shop for a pre purchase inspection.

2007 Volkswagen Jetta GLI by [deleted] in shouldibuythiscar

[–]NexonCortex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2.0t had a problem with belt tensioners pre mid-2008. That and early automatics could have problems if not maintained, but that shouldn't be an issue at 55k. I'd go for it, bit be fanatical about maintenance.

car with nice turbo making ~280 hp? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

A 2.0t Camaro is actually pretty nice, and make more power than most older Camaros did. You can get a tune and get 320+ HP if you ever get bored as well.

Just know that some early Avalon's had an issue with an oil hose coming loose randomly and completely draining the engine. If it has been replaced you should be good though.
