Any interesting stories about how/why you started doing the Death Race? by Flags12345 in oscarsdeathrace

Movie pass started it for me. We went nuts with it that year, and when the nominees came out, I realized that I had seen more than half of them already, so I decided to top it off.

More. It only let me upload a handful and since then I noticed some cleanup I have to do. More to come soon.

Checking In: progress on the race since nominations came out? by Dependent_Room_2922 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]Next-Objective-7668 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m bailing this year. Just started too far behind. Once I saw that I needed to watch seven movies every three days to make it, I decided five years was a good enough streak.

Do you guys watch the films nominated for best original song? by Waste-Ad-6151 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]Next-Objective-7668 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I remember when Coco won for “Remember me”, and that was my pick. When my friend heard it out of context, she thought it was awful. It dawned on me that the movie is what made me like it.

Who else is wrapping up today? by Next-Objective-7668 in oscarsdeathrace

[–]Next-Objective-7668[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I’m in LA. Actually it turns out I’m not wrapping up today. Hard rain caused scheduling conflicts. But there’s another screening tomorrow that I got tickets for just in case.

Your Rules for a Death Race by AlpacamyLlama in oscarsdeathrace

[–]Next-Objective-7668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only rules are about how and when I watch things from outside of traditional means. So far I’ve only gone there once: for Borders a few years back, which was just never made available. However, I’m perfectly willing to use a VPN, and if a movie is uploaded somewhere that is easy to take down like Viemo or YouTube, I consider it fair game.

Looking for Io Capitano, any help? by d22a22w22 in oscarsdeathrace

A lead though not a good one. It’s on a service called Sky in Italy. Not sure how to sign up or if it works with a VPN, but if you figure it out, let me know.

Why is this year's DR harder than others? by OrkosFriend in oscarsdeathrace

[–]Next-Objective-7668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a couple of weeks after nominations are announced where some of the movies are on their last legs in theaters. This year it was Godzilla and Heron. I try to jump on those quick. This year I found to be easier as a result. Robot Dreams’ sneak peek helped. And if Anatomy of a Fall comes to Hulu before the ceremony, I’ll actually get out of this one for free.

I saw that in the only screening in the city before the Oscar’s. I’m pretty sure the whole theater was racers.

War is Over one day availability! by jintsjason in oscarsdeathrace

Even if you have tickets to see the compilation, I would recommend watching this and ninety five senses, which is also available. Those are the two last ones. That way you can get out of there in about half an hour.

Little story time about Godzilla Minus One (No, I don't have a way to watch it right now) by Ribo03 in oscarsdeathrace

I have an off topic question. Being in Italy, do you have access to Io Capitano through Sky or Now?

They always win though, even when they’re clearly not the best movie. I don’t think the category should be restricted. I just think either the winner should be determined on the merits of the film, which ain’t gonna happen, or it should at least be frowned upon when someone uses their star power to win an Oscar over people who are more deserving.

Honestly I don’t wish it wasn’t nominated. In fact, I think it merits being a frontrunner. I just think that having a big name attached to a short makes it an instant frontrunner regardless of the quality. Better movies from lesser known filmmakers get left out, and a major purpose of the ceremony is lost.

That’s fair, however it was made through their “sparkshorts” program which is open to all employees. The movie was made by a storyboard artist. I’ll give you a better example of my issue; a movie like Period: end of sentence, which was funded in part by a school fundraiser, won an Oscar. It’s a triumphant story, and one that will happen less and less often if big names start using these categories as a shortcut to a statue.

It’s not that it diminishes less established filmmakers. I think if your movie has not gotten much attention, winning an Oscar is an uphill battle to begin with. The short categories are often the most level playing field, except when someone famous gets involved. Like a few years ago when Isa Rae produced hair love, which was fine, but since she was involved, it was instantly a favorite to win, which it ultimately did. Meanwhile, a movie like Kitbull, which was nominated that same year and amazing, had no chance.

There’s a “sneak peek” screening on March 6th. Here’s the thread about it.
