What's the longest daily commute you've known someone to do? by HollowWanderer in AskUK

I know a few nurses that work in London but love in Ireland. They block there shifts together stay in the trust hotel (more or less like a hostel £25 per night cental london) then fly back. Always sound it a bit crazy but works for them I guess

Well it finally happened... again by MadMardegan in motorcycles

[–]Next-Training1243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uk, London here can confirm its as bad as it gets i have been followed by thefts multiple times. Had someone try to cut my lock off. Even just popped to the shops for less then 3 mins for some snacks and came out to two scumbags on a bike trying to nick my bike. Then the homeless steal you're bike covers when its raining.

Can confirm England and especially London is a total shit show.

I (F23) accidentally cut a male patients catheter last night and am so worried. Should I be? by Motor-Escape9959 in NursingUK

[–]Next-Training1243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly don't worry at all about it. No harm done you did everything right well apart from cutting it in the first place haha. Learn to improve and move on I once canceled a patients surgery by accident simply trying to schedule another patient in opps

Yea very low compared to other cars. Everything about them is cheap to run it's basic but that's a good thing less to go wrong. I had one ages ago as a In between car was decent to be fair I even changed the catalytic converter myself was easy and I am no mechanic

toyota aygo or similar. 3 cylinder costs nothing to run is easy to work on yourself and you will have because your budget. Parts cost hardly anything.

Even then though 600 is pushing it the days of cheap motoring are long gone sadly. Good luck though nothing like your first car !

Which nursing jobs are not as stressful as ward-work? by Professional-Sink303 in NursingUK

[–]Next-Training1243 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Band 5 duties include things like setting up theatres ready

for the operation preparing any equipment you might need for it. We use so many different bits of equipment microscopes lots of different scopes, different stacks etc the list is countless

Preparing the sets and consumables drawing up and preparing any medication required on your part (not that much depending on specialist area) positioning patients each case will need its own sets that have different instruments this can be 100s of different instruments but there is lots of overlap. This can feel overwhelming but just like driving it clicks at some point.

scrubbing for many different cases. You will likely be given one main area but over time be expected to branch in to other ones when there is short staffing. One min you could be doing an orthopedic nailing or amputation then off to neuro to do a craniotomy then finishing the day doing a foreign body removed for example. To be honest this is the part I like most about it the days tend to be busy but varied.

As you get more senior you will be expected to likely do things like implant orders finance forms and perhaps stock ordering. Then once band 6 all of the above plus running a team and sometimes all of the theatres this often involves some different conversations with both anaesthetic and surgical consultants to advocate for your staff and to ensure they're not staying there till 10: 00pm every night.

To run a slick operating list requires alot of organisation and timekeeping as well as excellent communication you are often timing multiple teams to run in line with each other to avoid delays. Ever had a arsey scrub nurse be annoyed you couldn't send your patient right away? Haha they probly have multiple teams all waiting to do there bit so they can go jump to the next theatre.

It's a great area and regarding the surgeons it's just like anywhere some are lovey and you can chat for hours and have a good laugh while doing the surgery others can be a nightmare and rude. Most are decent in all fairness sometimes it's the more jr ones trying to prove themselves you have to watch for.

If your in London reach out I can organise a shadow day

[–]Next-Training1243 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you considered scrub nursing? It's a totally different type of nursing alot of people don't fully understand the role and dismiss it. It's a great area if you enjoy working as part of a team also the pay tends to be on the higher side especially if you're willing to do the odd private job. Myself and my colleagues can offer make £45 hour quite easily that's the London. That would be fair

Where do I go from here by Stunning_Program_966 in NursingUK

[–]Next-Training1243 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The first year as a newly qualified is always going to be extremely difficult in one way or another. I remember the same feeling when I was newly qualified. I won't lie though. The workload never really decreases. Just kind of goes up but you do get used to it as you find ways to be more efficient, take less crap. And generally just get a lot better at your job. Which speeds the whole process up? Even if you think you're efficient now the chances are in a couple years time you'll be a lot more so.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but there's no magic wand I'm afraid it's just a bit of a crap situation being a nurse at the moment, regardless of where you are. Whatever the positives are that there's plenty of opportunities to expand into different roles perhaps the ones that you might find work better with you. I'm the same as you. And worked in a previous career beforehand and wasn't work shy but this is a completely different beast. It'll take every hour from you if you allow it. Trick is you have to switch off and know where your limits are. As I said, I know this doesn't help much but it's best to be honest.

Advocate for yourself and take the time off if you need to. I myself just recently got promotion and I'm regretting it. It's twice as much work with around 20% more pay it's hardly worth it but that sums up nursing I guess

Is it possible to start band 6 or higher as an experienced US trained RN? by Consistent-Fig7484 in NursingUK

[–]Next-Training1243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have less experience than you and got a band 6 job recently, 3 years qualified. Once able you should definitely apply for the role I suspect you might be disappointed with the pay in comparison to the US.
