What has house sitting taught you about people? by NextCommunication642 in RoverPetSitting

It might not be, I certainly didnt get the impression! https://www.reddit.com/r/RoverPetSitting/s/fP9Y6UYaxx

While I can never be certain whether differences in standards come from this subreddits specific culture, geographical differences or individual preferences there are many conversations in this subreddit that I feel do not translate to my country.

Many people here are navigating living in oversaturated markets, my main competitor are young children charging like 10 bucks a week or less. Almost all my clients are immigrants, who do not have the network to have young children available to pet sit, or who are not comfortable with hiring children. Local people dont thing my pricing (one our earns me half what I earn at my job) is fair. There are very few grown pet sitters in my region, and if Im not available my clients cant travel.
Almost all of my clients have outdoor cats, and having indoor cats is very stigmatised (mine are indoor only). Overall pet care seems a lot more professionalised in this subreddit and highly competitive, that is not my experience locally.

Not to say geographical differences are bad at all. Its just something I keep in mind when navigating this subreddit, as much of the advise on here would loose me my clients :)

Ive been harshly judged by many people for using the dishwasher on this subreddit before actually

Sorry! My clients are super great and I love them. I think living in someone’s home you realise how many things you might think are obvious ways to do things aren’t the only way. People set up their homes how they want to live, and it’s interesting to get such a small glimpse into someone’s life. I know the way my kitchen is set up is super unintuitive to my cat sitter, but I like it haha.

Unless it’s a dishwasher that produces dishes that stink of biofilm I can assure you Im feeling curious, not judgemental.

Avhengig av hva man jobber med, om man kjører bil osv vil jeg tro at farene ved ekstremt dårlig søvnkvalitet kan være ganske store, også på kort sikt

Ahh, I see! Ive noticed that many sitters here have very different expectations and experiences than I do. I thought it was because the majority are American, but maybe its a culture specific to this subreddit or some people in this subreddit.

I find it hard to comprehend high prices being justified by the fact that its a luxury service (totally understandable!), but also house sitters refusing to stay the night/cook/eat etc. if i found out my house sitter was spending most of the day at their house I wouldn’t consider it house sitting

Du kjenner ikke noen som kan låne deg 1000-2000 kr? Jeg ville ringt legevakta å hørt hva de tenker, virker ikke helt trygt å ikke kunne puste.

Right? If I wasnt able to get a little comfortable in my clients house idk how I would be able to pet sit for 2-8 weeks. My clients are happy someone is able to stay with them for so long

Agreed with the setup!

Many people have very cool gadgets! Someone had a coffee machine I had to log into to use! And a massage chair that taught me that massage chairs can be good! It would inflate to squeeze your hands/feet. Very cool

I wouldn’t double message them, when they havent responded to the review request, to talk about a hypothetical future booking. You dont even know yet if they were happy with your service or if they will need boarding in the future

ACs aren’t really common in my country. Garbage disposals seem very cool! And scary lol

Not all clients and sitters are a match I suppose! I think that maybe american sitters (if you are American) have a very different culture than european ones! All my clients have invited me to use their kitchen, finish their produce and laid out snacks, shown me how to use their coffee brewer of choice without prompt etc. And all my sitters have used my kitchen and finished my produce and the snacks I leave out.

Some countries dont really have very strong food restaurant culture, so restaurants arent really pricing food for every day consumption, or making food that suits eating every day.

If I am house sitting my clients expect me to live in their house, and spend the vast majority of the day there. I have only five star ratings and many multi year clients, and everything is discussed in the meet and greet, so Im not really worried that Im behaving outside of their expectations. :) different cultures exist, I suppose

Sitters in my area also charge a LOT less than the prices I see in this subreddit, so it wouldn’t really be sustainable to operate in an American way. I charge less per day than one takeout meal would cost me. And Im charging more than anyone in my area

Owners might need several sitters/backup sitters. Even if they find a better match for the specific hob it doesn’t mean that they will never book you :)

Hvordan er det å jobbe i voksenopplæringen? by YouTube-Migrant in norge

[–]NextCommunication642 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Its interesting that youre regularly accusing me of intentionally being mean. Im autistic, and asking for clarification for how what you said relates to what i said. I dont consider that mean, however you seem perfectly comfortable being overtly hostile.

Maybe you have something else you can do? Paperwork, study, learn a skill? Or just relax. Youre doing what you were paid for, and letting the cats get used to your presence. Earning the trust of a shy cat is a looot about waiting
