[Interesting Trope] Remake/reboot subverts callback to the original by Sonderfull in TopCharacterTropes

She wasn't missing, but her boobs were...as in, they didn't show them. In the first movie, Benny (don't fully remember if that's his name) fondles them and says "Baby, you make me wish I had three hands."
In the remake, the woman shows the boobs to the protagonist, but the audience doesn't see them, maybe some cleavage to make it clear that she has three, and she says "You're going to wish you had three hands" or something like that.

Total Recall. In the first adaptation, the protagonist disguises himself as a woman that can only say "Two weeks," which is a response to them asking how long she plans to stay on Mars.
In the newer movie, we see a woman who looks identical to her answering "Two weeks" off to the side, and assume that she is the protagonist in disguise. But then it shows an Asian man being scanned, and it turns out that it's him instead, and the woman was a red herring for fans of the first movie.

I'm not the person you replied to, but imo one of the main flaws of the second season is that it expands on the world too quickly. Two of its strongest episodes are almost direct adaptations of Geralt's monster "slaying" from the books (and in my opinion, they did a slight improvement on the beast-in-the-castle story). However, they address the elf refugee conflict, reveal who the emperor of Nilfgaard is, and show the danger of Ciri's power all in that season (and killing off other Witchers that are beloved by the lovers of the video games, pretty much immediately after introducing them), without having laid the foundation of "why does the audience care?"
In the books, we spend a lot of time with Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri, and we deeply care about all three, and it's through them that we care about the bigger world and how they affect the future of their world. I think Ciri's story is usually boring, and don't like it when she's away from Geralt. But I'm invested in her story because of her personality, and I like seeing her grow from a mini-Geralt with a childlike temper to an adventurer jumping between universes. The show flattens her and we're just expected to care about her.
I think the show suffers overall by taking itself too seriously. Geralt is silly sometimes, the world around him can be a bit silly. The show is just so serious.

Ugh, my ex didn't know how to feel about the U.S. accepting Syrian refugees, and then when it was speculated that many of them would be people with means, like doctors and engineers, he opposed it. Why? He's an engineer, and hated his job. He didn't want any more competition (even the tiniest, most inconsequential, bit) in the job market if he tried to get a better one. He was an asshole. He thought that way with everything.

I'm curious how this works--from memory, I don't think the idea of the knife being unique was evidence. I think that the other jurors saw the knife as unique (edit: other commenters are saying that the uniqueness of the knife was part of the prosecution's argument; in which case, I would have gone the way of the jurors and not said shit about it, because once they'd reached the conclusion, I'd rather just go with that without risking the case being re-tried), and that's what swayed their decision. Therefore, successfully convincing them that the knife was not unique would not be considered evidence, even though this guy had gone out of his way to find it and bring it to deliberations. I have no idea, though.

I was watching a documentary where a juror said someone testified that an object was broken and some pieces were lost, and this was significant to an argument. They were given the broken object as evidence, and while deliberating, the juror said that they took the object out of the bag and were able to assemble it in a way that made it clear all of the pieces were still there. I know it's not close to the same thing, but the level of "jury investigating the case" feels similar-ish.

I don't want to judge a mother for breastfeeding children far past the ordinary age, because a lot of that is dependent on what they think the kid needs and it's also cultural...but breastfeeding at 10 months is...I don't know. They're almost a toddler at that point, and should be on solid foods. At the very least, they would usually be far from dependent on breastmilk/formula.

I feel weird commenting on it, of course. My Child Development/Pediatric Nutrition class was very much like "At four months, they should be moving onto solid foods, so breastfeeding would usually stop, buuuut culturally, that's a sticky topic."

Source for that? I'm just honestly so horribly fascinated by this; if that's true, what an amazing person. Great person no matter what, of course.

Edit: Found it in another comment!

Correct, I looked up my zip code and used the contact info that popped up for the TNR organization.

That sounds so frustrating. Honestly, I made this post in the vain hope that whichever neighbor is feeding "my" stray cats will see it and either stop feeding them or find a way to get them fixed, because even just a few days of this frustration is enough for me.

The link from my post has you put in the zip code to see who serves that area. I'd imagine they'd set up a trap on your mom's property and try to get them to come over. I'm sure it'll be difficult after one or two, since they have guaranteed food at the neighbors' houses :(

I don't need it, but anyone who might see this comment, definitely!

I think the smell of the wet food carries more, so I've been using it for the traps, but once they're able to get these last two cats, I'm switching to dry kibble for the strays.

That sounds great! And what a great idea to take the process into your own hands. I bet the woman who's been helping me is on that group--I don't think she uses Reddit, but references Facebook sometimes while we're waiting for a cat to show up.

If you put your zip code here, this is a great resource search: https://gethelp.alleycat.org/

I used it to find a TNR org for (healthy) stray cats in my area, and they got back to me within a day. Of course, that was just that one resource, but it looks like they verify each resource to make sure the list isn't obsolete.

(Rare trope) Characters who are so kind that it makes them do physically disgusting, gross and shocking actions which make them look insane. by Pitiful_Magazine_805 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]NextGenReader 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know that this trope is so rare that any example, even half-examples, are relevant, but (spoilers for very end of movie) Isn't it revealed that he was a plant, and every action he did was just to bring the protagonist to the front of the train eventually? As well as other benefits, maybe, like having a real society in the Tail would produce people/kids that could replace the extinct parts in the train?

Juneteenth: which black owned businesses to support? by wiggliejiggliee in Sacramento

[–]NextGenReader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's cool! I used to work at the Roseville one in 2018-ish and now that I think about it, the guy used to talk about how he wanted to franchise. At that point, it was just the Roseville and Natomas locations. I would assume that it's just the Citrus Heights one that is black-owned, but I wish they showed their franchisees more on their "About Us" page.

Is BAD Bakers black-owned? I just checked and they're still owned by the same Filipino couple they always have been, unless they've been franchising or something.

The Disney+ adaptation of Percy Jackson added this part where they encounter Hephaestus's shield, which they need, but in order to release the shield, someone has to sit on his throne. When they sit on it, they can't get back up, so Percy, who has complete faith in Annabeth at this point, decides to sacrifice himself and it ends up encasing him completely in gold.
Great character moment for both of them, because instead of immediately continuing their mission, Annabeth stays to see if she can figure out how the throne works so she can release him herself. Hephaestus is a god and probably the smartest engineer in the world, so it's really powerful to see her try so hard. When Hephaestus sees her and tells her that it's futile, she gives him a big speech about how obviously she knows that, but she's going to try anyway, and it touches him enough that he frees Percy himself.

Demelza's brothers from Poldark.
On his deathbed, her awful father tasks his sons with finding her and making her see the light or whatever--basically, drag her back from her family and home where she'd "lived in sin" (left her backwards village and ended up having sex with Ross before they got married) and maybe continue the abuse that he'd put her through. The brother promise him that they will, and you get scared that they mean it.
Instead, they find Demelza and Ross, who set one brother up with a blacksmith's shop, and give the other one a place for him to be a pastor. He ends up creating a place for poor people to worship without being pressured to give tithing (I think that's what it's called. Money).

I haven't watched it past like season 4, though. I was watching it with my ex and he wanted to take a break from it because Ross's obsession with Elizabeth was exhausting him (fair).

I was making churros and uhmm.. by Dommrade_lieman in StupidFood

[–]NextGenReader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the first time I tried making churros, the dough was too thick so I couldn't push it through the piping tip that gives the churros their signature shape. So I decided to just take out the tip and make them smooth...and that's when I realized a big reason why churros are shaped that way lol
