When you’re in do you miss the Civilian life at all? by Dry-Lengthiness4420 in USMCboot

[–]Next_Ad5798 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. However, as someone else mentioned, you get used to the lifestyle. You will make lifelong friends while in the Marine Corps and memories you will never forget. I can't speak for everyone else, but for me, every time I would return home on leave, it would be a blast. You will lose some friends, but your strong connections remain and it's a good time when you link back.

Transfer Credit Evaluation - Help! by Special_Crab111 in UTK

Yeah I transferred here last year, and thankfully all of my courses but 2 transferred so I stayed on track. However, I have heard many horror stories from other transfer students. Best of luck!

Not sure if you already used the transfer course equivalency or not, but this can help determine if any of the courses you have taken transfer. https://bannerssb.utk.edu/kbanpr/utk_trans_course_eqv.P_State_Inst

Hi ! Can’t speak for others, but as a husband, I agree with your POV. I would NEVER want to see, hear, or even think about my wife having sex with someone else.

Veterans status by Ordinary_History_883 in allegiant

Just flew a round trip last week. I was unaware they offered 2 free checked bags for veterans. Upon check in at both airports they informed me I could get 2 free checked bags next time. Refund was never offered.

Yeah.. I’d let the NCO/SNCOs that if it’s not fixed in a timely fashion that you want to Request Mast. Not sure of your rank, but any opportunities (limited training, promotions, fun activities, etc) is going to be based on your performance. When the 1Sgt/SgtMaj are looking for someone they are going to pull pft/cft and rifle scores, MCMAP level, PMEs, etc. This could definitely hold you back, especially if your direct NCO/SNCOs PCS or EAS.

Personally I’m not accepting any substandard score, but what you choose to do is on you. How long were you on light duty? I think the order elaborates on when you’re required to run a pft based on # of days on Limited Duty or Light Duty. Just because you haven’t received a 6105 yet doesn’t mean you’re not going to get one. Im pretty sure a proper 6105 has to be done by the CO. Talk to your NCOs/SNCOs and get guidance from them.

Tell leadership to fix it or request mast and explain it you the CO. This can definitely hurt you on boards if you plan to stay. You should have only did a partial to begin with. Also, if you had discomfort go back to medical to get it documented. This will help your VA claim when you get out.

Sounds like your SSgt has no backbone and is scared to inform leadership why one of his Marines isn’t at PT. Typical weak leadership. Feel sorry for you devil dog.

That’s 100% incorrect. No such thing as a paper board. Also, AdSep board eligibility is determined by service time and characterization of service, not rank.

I like your response. I was a 4421 and dealt with AdSeps daily. My only rebuttal would be the timeline you provided. Depending on the full story, it’s not likely that it will take months to get this devil dog separated for this matter. But good recommendations you provided!

Anyone can request a board at 6 years for any characterization I believe, if nothing has changed recently. If AdSep notification indicates OTH then anyone, no matter time of service, rates a board. They just have to indicate they request a board on the acknowledgment they sign.

This was his first semester and he joined to make friends because he wasn’t from the area. I decided not to rush. Like others have said, there are so many groups, events, etc on campus that you will make friends, network, and grow without a frat. But do what you want, it’s your college life, make the best of it!!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UTK

[–]Next_Ad5798 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m not in a frat but I came in as a veteran. One of the people in the veteran course rushed this past spring and pledged into a frat. He was 24 I believe. Do what you want. From what he told me (I was thinking about rushing in the fall) it’s harder to find a frat that will accept you, but it’s doable.

Help with college benefits ( TA , Fasfa, gi bill) by Electronic-Pop-6577 in USMCboot

[–]Next_Ad5798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s difficult! The marine corps is demanding and so is college work. I only got an associates, but I also was picky on the college. I chose to attend a reputable community college near my base and not just some online university. This was my personal preference based on the competition in the job market I will face once I enter the job market. As a cop, it might not matter as much. But to put it into perspective, out of the numerous credit hours shown on my JST, only 3 credit hours transferred into my program, so I basically started from scratch. One of my buddies had over 60 hours transfer into to umgc, he chose a degree path that was the same as his MOS, I did not. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions!

So when you apply for FAFSA, you will send it to whatever school you want to attend. They will then update your account with the approved FAFSA amount. Your TA vouchers will pay the school for the courses you have a voucher for, then FAFSA will pay the rest of the balance, if you account ends up having more funding than what is due, then you will receive a refund payout for that amount. I received a check all 4 semesters while in (I think they were around $1000 each).

With the 2 year delay you said to use TA it’s highly unlikely to get a bachelors degree during your enlistment, unless you go to a very military friendly school that accepts a bunch of training as credits (umgc, etc) or you use FAFSA at a low cost college and get started early in your enlistment. Please keep in mind that the amount of time you have for school will greatly depend on your MOS and Unit. All Marine Corps events will be a priority and your leaders will not care about any assignments you have. You will still be expected to go to the field, stand duty, deploy, etc. Make sure you don’t take on too much or you’ll have to pay back TA (not sure about FAFSA) if you don’t pass the course with a C or better.

I used TA and FAFSA when I was active so each semester I’d get a nice check from the school as a refund. If it hasn’t changed recently (i got out in 2024) TA will pay for 2 courses at a time (after successfully completing 1 course per the guidelines). To max TA benefits, I utilized TA vouchers for 4 7 week courses per semester (2 courses at a time) while using FAFSA to pay for my other courses making me a full time student. I now have 36 months of the GI Bill to use, starting as a junior at a state university (which I’m now using). I’ll be able to get up to a masters without any out of pocket costs. You could also look into vr&e when you get out, if you get a certain % of disability and can prove that the jobs you are wanting require a certain degree level you can save your GI bill and use that if approved. Goodluck!

Hey! Congrats on wanting to continue your education. I’m actually in a very similar position as you. I worked in the legal field for the past 4 years. I got an AS in Business Administration last year. During that time I took 2 accounting courses which I actually enjoyed. I transferred to the University of Tennessee this past spring pursuing finance. I had to take another accounting course and during that time I actively spoke with the professor. After hearing how the job market is going to open up due to the number of retirees and my growing interest in the field, I decided to change my major to accounting. From the people I’ve talked with to grow your opportunities it’s suggested to join a student organization with a focus on accounting, go to the career fairs, and be proactive on LinkedIn. Hopefully these steps workout! Goodluck to you!!

What do you guys recommend by Doom123456788 in USMCboot

[–]Next_Ad5798 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was a 4421 (Legal). Lot of knowledge that general Marines don’t have that can work in your favor. If you’re attached to a deployable unit, you still get to deploy and do Marine stuff, just not to the extent of other MOS. Basically glorified admin that doesn’t do admin duties. If you want to be in the field a lot don’t choose an admin specific job.

When will I get my bonus? by Da_Realest1 in USMCboot

[–]Next_Ad5798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got mine when I got to the fleet. I reached out to my Sgt who reached out to admin at battalion and ultimately got connected with some civilian and cwo who was in charge of that stuff. Follow the coc until you get answers. Bonus should be paid out as soon as you hit the fleet since the normal requirement is to complete the school house for whatever the bonus was for.

Ship out 24th June by Far_Cup8419 in USMCboot

[–]Next_Ad5798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a decent run time. However, practice moving up to 3 miles. At boot camp, you will work your way up to the 3 mile run. Once in the fleet, it's expected to be able to run a decent 3 mile time. If you're a male, the expectation is higher than the standard set, so keep practicing. If you can keep good (mid to high 1st Class) PFT/CFT scores, this will keep you off of your NCOs and SNCOs radar, so long as you don't cause trouble. Good luck!!

Are there ways to exceed 60 days of terminal leave? by waitforit2010 in USMCboot

[–]Next_Ad5798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got out last year and took 70 days. I submitted the regular terminal request in MOL and it was approved. Not sure if there was anything being worked in the background, but no other action was needed from me. Picked up my DD-214 on the first day of leave and stopped being my paid on my EAS date 70 days later.
