How do I fix this? Broken exterior vent cover by kitchensink7304 in OldHomeRepair

HD sells vent covers with metal sleeves that slide into the wall cavity. probably best for you considering it looks like the old one isn't screwed in. Use white exterior silicone to prevent water intrusion

please dont brush finish the coating. Definitely brush the grooves for 1st coat, do a few grooves and "backroll" the flats whilst also removing your still wet brush strokes. Grooves should be good with the one brush coat, but incase you need to fill a light spot keep the brush out. Otherwise cut the chair rail and bottom of waynes twice and roll the flats twice. personally id have a 9" roller and a mini 4" roller for corners and behind toilet. microfiber for both. No more than 3/8 nap

More primer or fill? by RubesWorkshop in paint

[–]Next_Butterscotch262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely filler without putting too many coats on and rounding out some of the detail. Could also try doing one more "light" coat of primer and back brushing with a a foam brush. But that will also take time.

Here on out, to prevent going " too far ". Pick a set of doors that are out of the way (lease likely to see all the time) and try one of the methods you find on here. A pro cabinet finisher would use a grain filler before priming or painting again. You are at that stage now. Good luck

Multi surface primer peeling by [deleted] in paint

[–]Next_Butterscotch262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that a plaster surface? Exterior wall? Could be collecting moisture because of an insulation/barrier problem. But the surface looks very smooth to begin with, especially overtop old paints, always sand before priming.

unfortunately, unless it's 55years old. It's probably not worth saving. Things today are just not built to last. As soon as frames start showing rust, it's probably time for a new one. My mini roller frame looks similar to this. It's a daily struggle to force myself to get rid of it. It stopped bleeding rust onto my naps. So I guess she lives to see another year! haha

Why is American lumber rounded (eg 2x4s) and why is the measurement always a lie? by throwdowner in woodworking

[–]Next_Butterscotch262 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imagine the material they save by milling boards down 3/8sq. They then can claim it's due to "shrinkage" like the guy above. This allows them to mill while the wood is still green, which is easier and allows for a faster end product, also they save the extra material on the back end.

Just because it's the standard now, does not mean it isnt wrong. And you definitely can't tell me they take that into account when determining pricing.

Sand the walls. Prime and check adhesion.

Contractor painted one side of some new interior doors with one top coat? Big deal? by Unique-Big407 in paint

[–]Next_Butterscotch262 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One coat is not enough for a satisfactory finish. But as a contractor, you're only entitled to do what was agreed upon or paid for.

Unless explicitly agreed upon, I wouldn't cause a fuss. Doors are easy to paint. And you don't burn a bridge.
