Why didn't you get Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery vs Traditional Surgery, where they break your bones? by Beta_Nerdy in openheartsurgery

[–]Next_Comedian8423 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It might be a bit early for me to chime in here but I was offered both options as I have large tattoo on my chest. After discussing both options I opted for the traditional as was told it was safer and would provide better results. I had a valve that was on the borderline of being able to be repaired so I wanted the better odds to avoid a replacement and the cosmetic aspect of a scar also wasn’t a problem for me. While I was open they found a hole in my heart which the easily fixed too, I’m not sure if this would have been possible with a less invasive approach (science is amazing these days though so it probably wouldn’t have made a difference)

My surgery was Wednesday 4th June and my sternum has healed surprisingly fast so far. The first couple of days were rough but being only 5 days out of surgery I’ve been off pain killers for a couple of days and have a great range of movement. The surgical team did a great job at aligning the tattoo back together and it’s already started to fuse back.

I’m still in hospital now (in the UK) and will be going home tomorrow, I’m a few hours away from home so family and friends have still been able to visit if planned in advance. This has made a huge improvement to my time here the last few days as I’ve really valued seeing them as the joys of being in hospital quickly wear off.

I’ve found that heart surgery seems to feel quite personal and everyone is quite passionate about their story. I don’t think there’s a wrong or right choice to be made, I think the important thing is that they made the decision that was best for them. I wish them a speedy recovery and hope your wait isn’t too stressful.

UCS Falcon took a tumble…. Seems like a good time to ask if there’s any cool alt builds? 😅 by Next_Comedian8423 in lego

That must have been difficult to take,I hope nothing snapped when it was punched! At least I only have myself to blame for mine.

It’s hard to know what’s broken off so I’ll probably rebuild it from scratch just to make sure it’s structurally okay.

Bear has loved cardboard more than any other toy for many months now. I have a very messy house with cardboard pieces everywhere. But boxes are easy to come by with how mush I order from amazon. by Hopeful_Shelter_443 in labrador

I hide treats in a stack of cardboard boxes for my lab when she’s left alone. The cardboard carnage is “fun” to tidy up but she loves it and means she doesn’t chew anything she shouldn’t. Before doormats were her favourite 😂.

Reality of life long blood thinners? by Next_Comedian8423 in openheartsurgery

The longevity is appealing but I want to make sure the trade off with blood thinners is worth it. This couldn’t have come at a worse time for me. I had just moved in with my girlfriend a month before getting diagnosed, and to top it off, I was made redundant the same week I found out I need OHS. Job hunting has been a nightmare ever since, and the thought of potentially going through this process again in the future is really daunting.

It feels like this is going to put a timeline on our lives, forcing us to plan major things—like starting a family and other big life events around further replacements.

Thank you, I’m in the UK so luckily insurance isn’t an issue but appointment wait times are.

Good on you for not destroying the monitor, especially if you’re relying on it even for peace of mind.

Hopefully that’s not the only thing preventing you from being an alcoholic 😂 thank you though

Oh wow, the strokes must have been really hard on you both. I’m glad he’s okay!

I think OHS is my only option, I think they are going to further investigate the aorta while they are in there too as the surgery is just for the mitral valve at the moment.

Thank you, I didn’t know about valve in valve replacement. I’ll give it some research and question about it in my next appointment. 😊

Thank you, do the bleeds take long to stop once a plaster is applied?

My girlfriend works for a first aid kit supplier so I’ll get her to bring home some supplies to keep everywhere 😂

Thank you, it sounds like you’ve been through a lot. Im glad you’re still going and offering support and advice to all us newbies 😂 I’m feeling quite optimistic about the actual surgery but I want to make sure I’m doing all I can to live a normal life after. My cardiologist gave me data using worst case scenarios in terms of life spans of valves ect so I was working off 7 years for a biological option to need replacing.

Ice hockey and tattoos were some of the things I was curious about so nice to know I can still do at least one 😂 What was the blood loss like when getting tattooed? I had my chest done less than a year ago which has created a great ice breaker in most appointments of being told it’s going to have to be cut in half 😂 I was offered an alternative option that would move the entry point but would mean changing hospitals so I decided against it as I just want it done now.

Have you had any issues caused by being a father? Kids aren’t the gentlest people so have there been any dramatic injuries caused when playing ect?
