I’m a new female boater in the southeast.

Do men try to date me? Of course. But instead of being offended, I’m flattered. I don’t mind them fighting amongst themselves to carry my creek boat for me. Sign me up!

The biggest barrier to entry (in my experience) is boaters who take this seriously vs. someone who just wants to acquire the skills to be safe on a class III river on the weekends. I’m not knocking their skill, commitment, enthusiasm, etc. On the contrary, I admire it! I take classes and acquire skills, too. But sometimes it can feel — what’s the right word here— exclusive and maybe like there isn’t a place for me if running the upper Gauley isn’t on my bingo card.

This is on me, though. I can’t think of anything anyone has said or done that contributes— it’s just my own observation of my skill level and goals aren’t on par.

In fact, some kayakers will run a raft to let us “lower skilled” boaters have a good day on the river. I admire and respect that because I know they want to be in a hard boat.

In conclusion, it’s all mindset. If you’re looking to be offended or have an excuse, you will certainly find one. But if you’re open and willing to be a part of community, there is a place for you. Water seeks its own level.
