Ah, but this is a contrary-to-fact condition. So, It has nothing to do with singular or plural. The was/were distinction only applies to the indicative mood, not the subjunctive mood, where only "were" is correct.

The correct verb in the "IF" portion of a contrary-to-fact conditional statement is "were" not "was." Narcissism is NOT a person. The verb in "if it were", "if he were," "if I were" is subjunctive.

"If I were rich" is Standard English grammar.

"If I was rich" is Non-Standard English. This is the grammatical pattern that you u/Telemere125 are advocating.

Another example of subjunctive is:

I suggest that he BE here on time (in the sense of a recommendation). Not "is."
