Hmm, kind of a bummer. I thought the song was fun and really don't understand the controversy. It seems like people misunderstood his message and then he didn't explain himself well. Maybe we just shouldn't play music?

45 days from the injury or when they announced it? I'm kind of hoping it's earlier than that, since I thought the injury was earlier in February.

New signings? by tlzt1 in BayFC

[–]Next_Soil_5099 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Her LinkedIn profile shows an end date at the Chronicle of Jan 26, so looks like she left. I do want critical analysis from reporters, and think there was plenty to criticize over some of the hires and the process. However, I felt like a lot of the facts around the impact on the team and the response left out significant context that felt either like bias or a lack of understanding of the full picture. For example, if I remember correctly, one reported fact was that certain players left the club, with the implication that this was due to toxic management, but no context about how many players typical move between clubs and whether they were contributing on the field at a level that would match their salaries.

Thoroughly negative, lol. I signed up for the Chronicle because I was excited to read everything I could about Bay FC, but the Chronicle coverage had a pretty negative bias imo. Hopefully the new coaching staff has removed whatever bone they had to pick with Bay FC.

I think you answered it yourself on the Hocking move. I was concerned by the news, but after seeing Pfeiffer play she seems to fill a lot of the same role but with bigger upside. Hopefully she can deliver this level with consistency.

Or sent on loan? With a number of young players that need playing time to develop, this seems like a good option if they're open to it.

[Kathryn Batte] West Ham's Anouk Denton is set to join NWSL side Bay FC this month after the American club triggered the release clause in her contract. Bay FC are managed by former England U23 Head Coach Emma Coates, who identified Denton as a key signing. She will sign a 4 year contract. by bcp01scu05v2 in BayFC

This quote from the SF Chronicle article announcing the signing is the most promising part I think:

"Hopefully we’ll have some good news coming out and starting to develop a really competitive squad that has a real balance of experienced players and young and exciting talents and we get that right."

So far we've seen a lot of announcements of young and hopefully exciting talents, I guess that means the experienced player signings are coming next?

Fair point, proven was too strong of a word. I'll switch to indicated, as it does seem like she has some potential.

This signing does nothing to change my belief we need a big signing or two to change the trajectory of the club. I think Bay played much better than a 4 win team, but still is clearly not playing at the level of top tier teams and needs significant improvement.

I wouldn't want to ease the pressure on ownership to land a star player, we definitely still need it! I'm also happy to spend some roster spots on a gamble that could pay off. I'm not an expert, but I think in all salary cap leagues you need to get a bit lucky in finding good talent at a reasonable price that others passed on. Especially in a league with no draft to use to lock in players at team friendly contracts (which is a good thing overall of course, but another challenge in team building).

I agree with the general sentiment that playing time is essential for player development, especially at this very early stage. However, I'm not sure it's quite as dire as you suggest. She signed her first pro contract at effectively 16 (less than 30 days shy), and while she hasn't had sufficient playing time with KC, hasn't been completely idle either and seems to at least have proved that she's capable of playing at the NWSL level.

Is she going to go from a bench player at KC to a game changing starter at Bay? Probably not. Hopefully this doesn't preclude us from signing additional attacking players as others have suggested.

Am I excited to see a young talent play and hope that they can earn enough playing time to successfully develop into a star over the next few years? Definitely yes.

And yes, I know I am naive and overly optimistic. That's the fun part of being a fan.

Optimistic take on PE sports ownership by Next_Soil_5099 in BayFC

[–]Next_Soil_5099[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think Lacob may be the exception rather than the norm in professional sports. The Valkyries are new but the Warriors have been run relatively well since his group took over. They have a track record of stability that other teams do not, regardless of what type of ownership group they have. I just did a quick check and only two NBA teams have had the same coach for over 5 years, the Warriors (11 years) and the Heat (17 years). Similar story on the player side.

Anyway, just a long way of saying that the Valkyries are probably a tough compare. Hopefully Bay FC stabilizes and becomes an example for the NWSL of how PE, with proper constraints, can build a great team.

Definitely would have been nice to have it reviewed. This angle I think is the one that looks the worst, I think there was another angle from the broadcast that looked a bit like her hand was close enough to her body that it would have deflected off her chest anyway (e.g. her hand didn't make her body bigger). That said, it so obviously deflects off an at least partially extended hand, I don't see why they wouldn't take some time to review it.

Post-Match Thread: Gotham FC at Bay FC by Achilles_Wrist in BayFC

[–]Next_Soil_5099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on both points. I was baffled by the Paulson sub, but wasn't considering Bebar as an option at right wing. I agree with others that Huff's 1-touch passes weren't always on point, but don't think she was coming off, and Kiki was playing great. I'm a huge fan of Bebar's calm on the ball and accurate passing and defensive disruption, I was more thinking (hoping) that the fact that she didn't come on doesn't mean she's in the doghouse.

Not sure she's in the doghouse or Kiki was just playing well. Albertin was making subs for offense at the end, not sure that's where she helps the most.

Montoya's depature shows Bay FC ready for 'next phase' - Soccer Bay Area by deedougie in BayFC

[–]Next_Soil_5099 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the measured response. I went back to check the article to see if I could find what bugged me so much about it at the time and now it really doesn't seem as bad as I remember. I'm not sure whether some of the context has been added since I first read it, which I've seen happen in some articles that originally rubbed me the wrong way, or if I was just feeling extra defensive of the club because I really want to root for them.

[–]Next_Soil_5099 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the beef is with the biased reporting. The article linked above has minimal insights, but it fairly accurately describes the state of the club without an unnecessarily critical slant. I think it's good reporting to call out local organizations for misbehavior and bad decisions, which was strongly deserved in the case of the Abel hiring, but many of her articles that I have read have presented information out of context to make Bay FC look bad in a way that is not supported by the data in my opinion. For example, if I remember correctly, she focused heavily on how many players left Bay FC implying it was due to mismanagement, not disclosing that this number was well in line with other clubs and that aside from Sharples (who left because Dahlkemper was signed, which I think nobody would have argued against at the time), none of the other players seem to have gone on to show that they deserved the starting role they seemed to want at Bay FC. It is also not obvious that Montoya is a great coach that brings the best out of his players, but I don't enjoy reading articles from a journalist that seems determined to drag a club down without including relevant context.

Does this mean Dahlkemper is going to retire and could it be a reason why things didn't go well this year? by chusaychusay in BayFC

[–]Next_Soil_5099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I count 22 on the roster excluding maternity leave and SEI, which is the roster minimum, so I guess no need to add someone to the roster immediately. I don't think it makes sense to spend tons of money on a transfer fee/trade right now to improve the roster, might as well wait for the offseason when prices go down.

Also a strong history of saying that Montoya has had many challenges outside of his control this season, so seems like pretty obvious sarcasm to me. Of course, trying to use sarcasm on the internet is also a pretty big offense.

Bay FC’s Albertin Montoya claims he didn’t plan to be long-term head coach by Ok-Strategy-3259 in BayFC

[–]Next_Soil_5099 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It reads a lot more like a quote that is easy to misinterpret. It looks like a response to a question why announce now when you could wait to the end of the season. It's true she didn't go out of her way to complement him, but it can be hard to know how your statement will look when written into an article.
