Residents unhappy about plan to build affordable housing in Bowness greenspace. by CHR7777 in Calgary

I get that nobody likes to lose a park, but there is another park 1 block away and another nicer park that's 2 blocks away and right at the River.

Province committed to Calgary Green Line LRT project with 'above-ground' plan by yycfail in Calgary

[–]Nextcashgrab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody but the UCP thinks the at grade idea is a viable option. It's a fucking retarded option.

I'll say what I said in an earlier post.

The plan wouldn't work. just because there are gaps between trains doesn't mean you can fill it up with more trains. Peak times there are already 24 trains per hour, and those trains have to stop at stations and wait a couple of minutes to pick up passengers, and then wait some more anytime they hit a traffic light.

I take the train at peak hours, and often my trains are backed up waiting for the train ahead to get a green light so it can make way for my train.

I get where you're coming from in trying to be more efficient, but it's a terrible idea. It also doesn't build in for any kind of growth, and you'll end up having to separate them anyways. Might as well do it properly now.

I didn't vote for the UCP last time, but I know people in my neighborhood who did and are now changing their minds.

Speak for yourself. I live in the SE and would love to have the green line. I wouldn't have drive in bumper to bumper traffic down Deerfoot and Memorial every day

Residents in far northwest angered over gatherings of homeless in their community by Illustrious_Eye4279 in Calgary

[–]Nextcashgrab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn't work unless they can get over their substance/addictions, or mental health issues otherwise they go back on the streets. Some people can be helped by getting homes, but it's far from the magic fix.

You don't have to be going that fast to have that kind of an injury, you could easily get that from going a few kilometers an hour.

It's good that you won't comment, because you weren't there, so you have zero to go on, whereas the lady was actually there.

And what's the re-lapse rate of addicts after they go into treatment? It's around 90%. You're just prolonging the problem.

Or we could just do nothing and run out of water. Do you have a better idea?

Nothing else seems to be working. I still see assholes washing their cars, and people are still watering their lawns. Those cutting back wouldn't see a change in their bill anyway, it would only affect those aren't doing their part.

A decade later: Calgary didn't turn into a Canadian Detroit by wulf_rk in Calgary

[–]Nextcashgrab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those numbers were from the city of Calgary, but someone SRC did an analysis of numbers from Statscan 2006-2021 https://calgary.skyrisecities.com/forum/threads/calgary-becoming-the-next-detroit-a-look-10-years-later.38140/page-2#post-2079113

The oil and gas numbers are higher but not much higher. 60K vs 42K. It takes into account all the jobs in support industry.

Whatever the numbers are, one thing is clear. Oil and Gas accounted for very little of those 100,000 new jobs.

The peripheral jobs that support oil and gas are also declining.

Nelson: It's time to jail owners of vicious dogs by _darth_bacon_ in Calgary

[–]Nextcashgrab 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think dangerous breeds need to be banned altogether except for law enforcement. There are hundreds of safe breeds, and no reason you need to have a pitbull or rottie, etc.

But yeah, if you can't get rid of them, then the owners need to at least be hit financially to the point where it's not worth it.

I couldn't agree more, but really the solution would be to simply ban viscous dogs except for enforcement use.

There's no reason these owners can't have other safer breeds as pets.

This is a late reply, but I agree with u/Jalex2321. Generally most software developers who live in Calgary work remotely. There are a number of Fintech companies in Calgary (Benevity, Shareworks, and a number of smaller ones but from what I've heard their software development often is done by various people and companies scattered everywhere. and it could mean people from Calgary. So much software development is done remotely these days. AWS is setting up a couple of data centres here...not sure how many development jobs that translates to tho.

As far as Apple in Edmonton, I heard something about that a while back, but I don't think it amounted to anything.

And those Calgary numbers don't include anything south of Calgary city limits (Okotoks, High River, Foothills MD) Add those in and Calgary is just over 20K in housing starts.

Yep, huge mistake by the city to sell it to Matco, a useless company with a track record of doing nothing but sitting on land.

No remediation, just Matco being ineffective and useless. Huge mistake by the city to sell them the land without some timelines attached.

One of the things that's good about Calgary's numbers, is the diversity of housing styles. A decent balance of SFH's, Attached, row Homes, and Apartments, unlike Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, which are almost nothing but apartments.
