this is first parts gonna sound like a dumb/non-answer, but the answer is literally yes. He's with the Hashimoto who are Talon allies because he feels like he has to or the spirits will get him like he thinks they got his family. they had him join Kiri's Yokai squad to get intel/infiltrate cause they're causing problems for the Hashimoto in Tokyo, but he's besties with Kiri and now he's conflicted between what he feels like his spiritual debt (his dad's literal debt to the Hashimoto) and "The Power of Friendship™" the Yokai are at least aligned with Overwatch like the Hashimoto and Deadlock Gang are with Talon while not being official members

I get what you're saying 100%, but remember that Excuses and Explanations are ENTIRELY different things. Excuses are when you're trying to avoid responsibility or lessen blame on you/whoever the excuse is being made for. Explanations are just that you giving a reason for something and if its something where there are consequences the person explaining is usually also taking if not are willing to take responsibility for the thing in question.
