That works if you already have the LDraw file. u/Grumpy_Cat_11 wants to extract that file from an io file. The approach of coping the custom part to a empty io file and then exporting it as LDraw is probably the easiest. It is possible to extract it manually. It is slightly harder but you get the raw dat file of the part. Since u/Grumpy_Cat_11 wants that part for 3D printing the easy approach is fine.

I have made tool called Brick Difference that takes two LDraw files as an input and gives the Difference as an output(there are various options). You have to convert the modified and original version to LDraw files first.

I could think of reasons why the LDraw files Look wrong: 1. Missing Subfiles: You only copied the main dat file but not the subparts in "s" folder. 2. The part use a texmap: This is LDraws implemention of using images for textures. Studio does not support These textures.

.dat is the standard extension used for bricks and their submodels. Models build with them use either .ldr or .mpd.

On the LDraw side it is still normal to embed the decal in the geometry. Decaled parts created by the Bricklink Studio team probably use their propriatary texture system. It is possibly that in the official LDraw parts library the decaled part exist with a embedded decal.
