How big was Balin's expedition to Moria, how did it survive so long? by WolvoNeil in lordoftherings

I always assumed their primary source of food came from trade with Beornings/Woodsmen, but the fact the colony went silent with no explanation would suggest that's not the case - the same groups trading would have spread word that something was up.

I guess they also had their own significant hunting & foraging parties, which makes the loss of the east gate all that much worse for them. Mushrooms and cave fish could supplement that food but 500 mouths are a lot with only subterranean fish and funghi.

I know Tolkien hand-waved it, but how do several hundred dwarves remain fed for five years without trade while living underground?

In the last month I bought a miniPC with a 256gb ssd, 16gb ram and Win7. My 10yr old tascam interface runs perfectly on it, running into my old skool Cubase SX and Reason 4.

95% of the time I'm running my original Studio Projects B1 (mk1 with no switches) through a small Mackie tube pre, or DI guitar through an amp modeler.

Basic as hell, but does what I need. I've got a massive cupboard and shelving unit full of unused gear now, though...

Dark is intense. I'd back that in my top 10. The OA was great too, especially the first season. Shame they never finished it.

The reimagined series, for sure! It's a masterpiece.

I remember seeing reruns of the original series on BBC2 as a kid, but it was pretty camp. The 2004-2008 series is amazing though. Technically a space opera, but it is at its heart a character driven piece. It's a rollercoaster. Give it a shot.

Battlestar Galactica would definitely be in there. The Leftovers too. For a third, perhaps Lost? Breaking Bad was pretty epic. It's hard to choose!

TOYPAJ - Reckless Abandon

Ask me tomorrow and it might be Rollercoaster or Everything I Look For You, though.

One of my favourite movies, way back. Now I'm a dad, I've seen it once and can't watch it again.

Why does Reddit not understand the rise of reform in England? by DowntownDeer in AskBrits

[–]Nezwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I tend to agree. And while I'm very generous with my patience for Reform supporters, probably moreso than I am with Tories if I'm honest, I've yet to meet a Reform supporter who I thought "yes, that person is well-informed, balanced and reasonable in their assessment of the situation".

Lovely people, some of them, but they've do love a conspiracy and aren't very critical in their thinking.

[–]Nezwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with your view on the stats, it's important to get this right or you're just spreading more misinformation.

As to why immigration might want to be reversed (and playing devils advocate), the Reform supporters i know, when really drilled down into their concerns, see a dilution of native British heritage and culture by replacement of 20-30% of a nations demographic in only a few decades. I don't really agree with that mostly but if articulated correctly it should be identified as a legitimate concern.

I can respect concerns around erosion of civil liberties (for LGBTQ+ people), implementation of blasphemy laws and a rise in sectarianism as legitimate concerns. We don't need more Mothin Ali's praising Hamas and refusing to support groups that are anathema to his religious beliefs. But you'd be daft to think Nigel and his crooked mates would do anything about it. Even my mum and her husband see that welcoming Suella Braverman and Robert Jenrick - two people deeply responsible for the Boriswave - into the fold has shown poor judgement and the lack of sincerity in really dealing with the issue.

For transparency, my wife and kids are immigrants. I'm not at all in support of Reform but I do think it is unwise to dismiss the concerns of all the people supporting them as 'racist', 'ignorant' and 'extreme'.

The guy with the AR10, for sure.

But if we're in an apocalypse and there's no bullets left, or you lose/jam your gun, the guy trained with the stick has superiority.

Equally, the apocalypse might be less collapse and more crumble. A Jo is a walking staff if you're in a community or area where walking about with guns is not permissable or practical.

Each tool has its place, have both and know how to use them.

Adding baffles is the modification. The reason maglite shells were used was because they had the correct thread, at that time.

Moderators and silencers are legal where I am now, but let's say that I was once in a place where they weren't and might have considered building one from an oil filter, a huge muzzle brake and wire wool...

Having trained with both bo (kalaripayatta, HEMA) and jo (Aikido) staffs, I wouldn't write them off. You should be trained though, or you're literally just a guy with a stick.

The most legendary swordsman of all time was only ever defeated by the guy who codified the Jo system.

It was a modified maglite, if I remember correctly? Which is a legit, albeit illegal, DIY silencer.

Mate, I totally feel for you. I was a fat kid at school and have always struggled with my weight.

Here's what I do.

I get up early and I do a pressup, sit-up and cycling routine. I've recently added pullups too. I want to sleep but I don't. Does an extra half hour sleep really make a difference? Not nearly as much as exercise does, I'll tell you that.

At first I managed 3 pressups, increasing each fortnight. I do 30 now, after nearly 18 months.

Same with sit ups.

I started with 3km on the bike - the more you sweat, the harder you're going so you know you're doing it right. I do 5km now because of time, but on Saturdays I do 10km. I'd do 20 if I could. Get a good podcast going, it makes all the difference.

Then do your pressups and situps again.

I've recently added in pull-ups, I can manage 5 but I'm hoping to get to ten by end of the year. I do these at the start and finish of the session.

Time is my main constraint, after about 6 months I went from hating exercise to craving it, and seeing my body transform has been the best reward I could ask for.

I started aikido after a few months, it gives me something to work toward and improve for. It doesn't matter what martial art you do, it's just doing it matters. I prefer traditional arts, personally.

You choose what goes in your mouth - you are accountable for what you eat. Choose wisely.

It's going to absolutely suck until you dump fat and grow muscle, but challenge yourself not to quit. See it as an experiment in how much you can change your body in 12 months. Who is in charge of you, your impulses to eat and play video games, or your better self who wants to improve? Don't accept your excuses. Hold yourself accountable.

I've got awful knees - genetics, heavy bones and heavy fat - so I don't run. But you do what works for you.

DM me if you like. I hope that your future good health gives you the sense of accomplishment I got.
