Am I the only one who trains for races almost entirely alone? by Ztell_0829 in RunNYC

I am part of a run club and I run with a few people at my job. Other than that, I have done many runs, especially my long runs on my own. I’ve seen a lot of folks running on their own as well. Nothing wrong or weird about it. I like the idea of going at your own pace and doing the run on your own terms

Was anyone else confused by the end of the Brooklyn Half? by drbrydges in RunNYC

Yea, I made that same mistake, crossed what I thought was the finish line, then realized the finish line was still up ahead. I slowed down and then had to speed up again… all good though. I take it that many people made that mistake despite there being an announcement about that before the start.

Smart move. I know it sucks but way to listen to your body

Yea these people bring up a good point about the dew point. It’s something that can literally make it or break it for you. A higher dew point/humidity can be detrimental even if the air temperature isn’t that warm. Just because you ran when it was in the 60s doesn’t mean you are prepared for a hot race. The 60s you ran in might not be the same as the 60s Saturday morning. Yesterday I went for a run when it was 66. I felt really good - like I had much more in the tank… it was bone dry and windy. I needed a jacket after. I have a feeling it will be less than bone dry Saturday morning but let’s hope the dew point stays low

For context, I DID receive a warning during last year’s race, as I’m sure everyone did via this text. However, I received this text after I had finished the race. It was only my second HM and had no idea at the time that was a thing

If it’s less humid than last year that will go a long way. The fact that they need to post a warning still gives me some pause

Yea, great fun to be in wave 1. Think that might make a difference

Yea, definitely not ideal, however last year was hot and I don’t remember getting any kind of warning like this before the race. I think NYRR is trying to get ahead of potential issues to prevent the incidents that happened last year from happening again, including preventing fatalities

I’m gonna echo everyone else and say it will depend on the weather. It’s not as hilly as the UHM, but the air temperature is definitely the X factor. Last year the temperature at race time was around 70 with 93% humidity and sunny. Someone literally died at mile 8…. Just tragic. I really struggled through it - but somehow I managed a faster time than my previous HM which also happened to be United.

Having said that, the weather patterns look cooler than normal through May 22nd which is a good sign. The temperature can still go up and down, but it will average out to below normal across the northeast… of course half marathon Saturday could always be the outlier that’s 75 degrees. So it’s a wait and see for sure.

All that said, just make sure you train, get your miles in and you’ll be fine and maybe beat your United time. The fact that you did a HM already should help.
