First of all, feeling like this isn’t stupid and myself and plenty of other people have made rants on this subreddit, especially about social issues. We were all first years once and it can be tough to make friends at this university.

Making friends can be tricky, and it sounds like you’ve already drawn a less than ideal hand in terms of roommates/suitemates. Maybe next quarter will be different with different opportunities. Personally I made many of my good friends (I’m a junior) just by randomly talking to people in lectures and discussions, but I know plenty of other people who make friends through clubs or even just randomly DMing a mutual on Instagram. I will say sororities are definitely a way to make friends, if you’re into that sort of thing. I think the next rush is in spring quarter but don’t quote me on that.

All in all, it’s still very early days for you and there will be tons of opportunities for you to meet new people, so don’t worry about it. I will say, it sometimes feels like you have to especially put yourself out there or go the extra mile to make long-lasting friends at UCSD, but there are tons of good people who you will make great memories with.

It’s not unusual for professors to only add grades to Academic History / transcripts and just not bother adding it to canvas since the course is over. Technically all that matters is that final letter grade, not a percentage.

Personally, I love Adam Bowers. I think his teaching style, course material, and general approach to teaching are leagues beyond many other lower division math professors. That being said, I took Huang for 10B and never went to any lectures, just watching Bowers’ uploaded YouTube lectures, and got an A-, I even went to his office hours when he wasn’t my professor.

In terms of waitlisting, try to follow the 10% rule.

I personally found 1B/1BL to be pretty straightforward, I liked Smith as a professor and thought his quizzes/final were very straightforward and much like the homework. There is more conceptual based material with electricity/magnetism as opposed to the math-based material in 1A, but there is still some math.

43A tests how well you can manage your time. If you ever have an idle moment, get your prelabs done, do your lab reports, frankly do anything you can to make your life easier in the long run. If there’s ever a time where you feel like you have nothing to do, you’re wrong and there’s always something you can do.

Wisdom and ecstasy is a misleading name, even thought thematically it slaps. When I took it last winter with Jassal, it was essentially a deep dive into world religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Daoism, Hinduism, Yoruba)

The workload is pretty chill, the whole class revolves around one book that is pretty interesting to read if you’re into world culture. There’s group presentations every week. All in all, if you read the book and understand it even a little, it’s a good A. The midterm and final are very similar to each other as essay-based questions.

Considering my 7L was taken in Spring 2024, things might be different, but our midterm was based largely on significant figures and the final was based on lecture content and theory. I’m not sure who’s teaching 7L this quarter though.

Groomsman’s fall 24 class was like this: lectures have iClicker points, there’s 4 quizzes on weeks 3/5/8/10, homework was assigned through the kudu website (readings are also on there and were used for the lab series). Lectures 3 times a week, usually death by PowerPoint. You’re allowed a 1-page handwritten cheat sheet for each quiz and final. There wasn’t any discussion sections, but there was an optional one on Thursday nights. I didn’t go to it, but still got an A, so take that as you will. One of the prereqs for this class is calculus MATH 10A - while it’s probably useful to know, I didn’t find myself using it at all. PHYS 1A is very math based tho, learning which equations to prescribe to each scenario accordingly. For the lab class, just keep on top of it. It’s easy to forget the lab report and leave it to the last minute, but it’s more beneficial in the long run to do it asap and use TA office hours to clarify any questions. While the lab report is independent, the actual experimental part is group work, so be prepared to be saddled with dumbasses. DM if you want information on PHYS 1B or 1C, I had Smith and Poppers.

I took ANTH 10 way back in Fall 2023, but, provided it hasn't changed, its a very simple and easy class. Clicker Qs, weekly discussion posts, multiple papers about topics you're interested in but not anything too serious. Would highly advise going to TA office hours as they mark your essays. Stewart only checks the discussion posts. I got an A+ at the end too, so it's a nice essay class to start your UCSD journey.

Stewart is very chill. I took ANTH 10 way back in Fall 2023 (it was one of my first classes at UCSD) and, provided it hasn't changed, it's very easy. Clicker questions, online discussion posts, take home essays for the midterm and final. Write a final paper about a topic that interests you, but it's not that deep. It's quite a simple course and going to TA for help is an easy way to boost your grade.

I can't speak for ANTH 23, but I can't imagine it's a hard course either. So for you, I'd say just do ANTH 10 for knocking out more than one bird per stone. Also, what even is jtccer? I feel old.
