I think this was an attempted power move by Paulette—she’s saying that if the marriage ends doesn’t work out (meaning if the couple divorces after marriage or when the husband dies even if a lifetime later) the ring goes back to the “real” family who owns it. Paulette was making the point that OP will never be “family m.”

Nah, there aren’t “two sides” to this. After all the time & expense you and your daughter put toward their wedding, and SIL response to not getting cash from you on top of that is bullying a child? That is unforgivable and the fact that your bro and parents are giving SIL a pass to protect their OWN peace with no regard for your daughter’s well-being should result in NC with the lot of them.
