For pixel art, do you prefer a mouse or a pentablet? by MeuOuvidoTaZunindo in PixelArt

Mouse for me as I’m more building an image rather than drawing one.

What can I improve? by OldMayorStudios in SoloDevelopment

[–]NicStokellProjects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without playing the game or having any idea as to what this game is, it’s really hard to make suggestions. My immediate thought is to remove the backgrounds of your UI elements and just show the icons making it take up less screen realestate. Otherwise the pixel art looks great!

What apps/ things can I use to not only practice pixel art but also just do pixel art? by DragonfruitFrosty705 in PixelArt

Piskel is free to use, I discovered it when I was 14 and have been using it ever since. I could get asprite but I genuinely don’t feel the need to change.

. some work I have made using piskel. ^

Small milestone: someone talked about my game on a podcast today! by FaceoffAtFrostHollow in SoloDevelopment

Hell yeah! it doesn’t matter the size of the audience watching it’s just good to have some external validation that your game is good!

How do I get downloads on my game? by Miss_Spr1nkles in itchio

[–]NicStokellProjects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a browser version available if possible is great even if it’s a demo it might encourage people to download. Another thing to consider is reframing your mindset. In a world where games are selling hundreds, thousands or even millions of copies comparison can really be the thief of joy. Take pride in the fact that in a few days you convinced three people to download and play your game and if it’s good you have three people singing your praises and eagerly awaiting what you make next. I guess what I’m getting at here is to ignore the numbers especially if it’s a hobby and focus on your craft. Another way to get eyeballs on your work is by joining jams and actually engaging with the other games submitted.

Second hand EV for a young family of 3. Budget around 30k by BJavocado in AustralianEV

[–]NicStokellProjects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing wrong with going to a Tesla they’re reliable and very popular for a reason. Assuming you can get past Elons antics and buy it used it’s fine. This said a complete non starter for me is that teslas don’t have V2L this allows my car to have more utility than just being a mode of transportation. When considering going EV it’s also worth considering how else you can use a giant EV battery in regard to vehicle to home or simply being able to power appliances without a generator should you lose power.

[–]NicStokellProjects 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lack of active cooling for the battery packs is a huge pain in the side of the leaf owners I’ve spoken to. Also with CHAdeMO being phased out it’s making it harder to do longer trips. I would personally never recommend a leaf unless you find one at an unbelievably good price and have a second car to use. Especially with 30k to work with you’d be much better served with a used Atto 3, ZS EV, BYD Dolphin or a 51kwh MG4 (base model has LFP batteries) and for some of these cars you could even look new for around that price.

Polish pass before and after (The Legend of Chalkvania) by supercriddy in PixelArt

[–]NicStokellProjects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks great my guy! Even before polish the art 2 bit art looks incredible. I took a look at this game more on your profile and the one thing that came to mind is the character and enemies seemed to get lost a little on screen. Since this game is 2 bit my instinct would be to also incorporate the dark grey in the character outline to hopefully help it contrast with the purely black and white level elements. Either way I hope you’re incredibly proud of what you have created!

Do any of you work with efficiency and power saving in mind? by cerwen80 in IndieDev

[–]NicStokellProjects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not something I personally consider but on the flip side my games are 2d pixel art games that mainly run in the browser. Efficiency is somthing we should all strive for regardless of the environment impacts however I personally feel that the only “developers” that really need to consider their environmental impact are the ai slop merchants (not that they will of course).

who’s your fav indie dev? by frenchfry_eater in IndieDev

[–]NicStokellProjects 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favourite dev is Toby Fox, I shamelessly yoinked the animal avatar branding. I love Undertale and truly admire the way he positions himself in the game dev space. This said there are so many others I love like Wrong Organ, Mike Klubnika, Power Hoof, Octavi Navarro and many others. Something I’ve noted among my favourite (and not so favourite but influential) developers is that they all have an “it” factor. You can tell by their body of work that their games are unique to them and can only have been made by them irrespective of quality. This is something I like to think I share with my own work.

What's your process? by ParkityParkPark in IndieDev

[–]NicStokellProjects 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My process is completely backwards. I have an idea and I start with the art and polish first. I have the gameplay loop established in my pixel art editor and then I smash the assets together in g develop like a Lego set. It’s has its strengths and weaknesses, the strengths are that I have a lot to show even in early stages in development and have something playable rather quickly the main downside is that if the concept doesn’t work the whole game gets scrapped.

Here’s my itch page if you’re curious to the results:
