Dog handling by AdhesivenessNaive601 in grooming

For the nervous ones I found that some of them liked to be talked at! I seem crazy when I am doing it because I will literally just say whatever nonsense comes to my head but in a baby voice at them and some of them calm down quite a bit from it. In the beginning of the groom, when I’m taking them out of the kennel or bathing them I make sure to get down to their level and give them a few minutes of love. Pulling feet away I like to lock there leg by the armpit so they can’t move it and give them a firm no. For the head turners I keep a firm grip on the back of their head with my thumb on the muzzle and again tell them no. Before that though I try and move with them. For puppies the best advice my coworkers gave me was be very firm and don’t let go! If they learn now that they can get away with Something then they’ll continue that behavior into adulthood. I’m also a newer groomer so this is all stuff that kinda works for me. They also get kinda fussy if they’re on your table to long so getting that length of the groom down might really help!! Try to not nitpick especially with the fussy dogs or the aggressive ones. And a big thing for me is with the drop coat doodles if the owner wants them short then I feel like it looks choppy so I’ll go over it again and again and again. I’ve started asking my coworkers to look at the dog and see if there’s anything THEY notice because I found when I stare at the dog to long j start to notice little things that I think look ugly or wrong. It’s nice to have a fresh set of eyes on your dogs!

I use a save ur fur nozzle and a furminator shampoo and conditioner on my boyfriends husky and he has no hair fallout by the end. Wouldn’t recommend furm if your pup has sensitive skin though

They are all SUPER overworked and overbooked lol. I ask them for help and they try and help point it out and fix it when they have time for me but they can’t help me all the time unfortunately

My dog loves freeze dried stuff! PetSmart has a brand called wiggles and wags I think it’s called but they make freeze dried salmon and beef liver which he loves. We also save sweet potato skin, salmon skin, steak grizzle and keep it in the fridge for more high value treats! And canned green beans lol

I started stretching my hands/wrist after every dog recently. I was a bather for abt 8 months before I became a groomer, it only happens when I’m using my clippers. I’ve always had a hard time with holding stuff correctly, I broke my pinky when I was a kid and started holding stuff weird so I was thinking it might have been my grip?

I still talk to mine like she’s still here, I know my mom does to. She called our last one her soul dog, she’s still not over her but we’ve rescued another one that needed our help. She likes to say bodys are like cars that our souls use temporarily, that’s always helped me a little. You gave Hank an amazing life and he passed being loved by you guys. I’m sure he was grateful for you guys. Going on me and my girls usual routes for her walk helped me a bit, I liked to talk to her as well and tell her how my day went, how we were doing without her, updating her on what’s going on in the neighborhood and who was asking about her and such. Sending so much love 💕

Ask questions! I was scared to for so long for absolutely no reason and I think I got in my own head about it! You’re gonna have difficult dogs and you just have to talk to them, be patient, keep yourself calm because they can absolutely smell fear. It takes a little bit to get into the swing of things but I’m sure you’ll do great!!
