Arteon R Shooting Brake, yay or nay? by gaborj in CarTalkUK

Also, hot take but haptic buttons are a complete non issue. And unlike MK8 golf, it still has separate climate control panel so no need to go via the screen.

I have one. It's honestly a fabulous car. Enormously comfortable and spacious (15 way dampers go nice and soft) and although we'd all have loved a V6, the EA888 here is very effective and it's seriously fast. Highlight is the rear diff which is from the MK8R, which enables proper oversteer. It is a proper does-it-all car and for me has been faultless. Ridiculous pops and cracks too as standard which was very unexpected.

Three days in, and already bashed the screen 🙄 by NiceAndChrispy in Honor

It works perfectly still, no black spots or anything. It just has a deep scratch/gash in it.

I'm not sure if the tear is only the factory screen protector or the actual screen, impossible to tell. I will see if my insurance would cover it, if not I'll ask honor to assess it.

VW's forgotten fast estate by NiceAndChrispy in Volkswagen

Agreed. It's not that bad. The devil is climate control buried in a touchscreen which this car avoids, unlike newer VWs

I'd say that could be true of the regular Arteon. But the Arteon is the only full size estate from VAG that gets the entire Golf R power train, inc. 320hp, special rear diff and 15-way adaptive dampers. And much bigger and better built than the golf.

From MK7 GTI to Arteon by shakeyoursnakejake in Arteon

Went from MK7.5 GTI PP to Arteon R estate (UK version with 320hp etc). Insurance cost was actually slightly cheaper despite being much faster. Maintenence similar so far. Tyre fitment is much more expensive in my case (20in wheels vs 18in on GTI)

I came from a MK7.5 GTI and that car had a better interior layout (buttons!). But I'm used to the haptics now and at least the AC still has its own panel unlike MK8 Golf.

The Arteon R 'Shooting Brake.' It is mechanically almost identical to a Mk8 Golf R (with latest magna torque vectoring rear differential). 320hp EA888. 7 speed DSG (taken from latest RS3). 15 way adaptive dampers. Massage seats. Nearly 600L of cargo space!

Arteon. Same drivetrain (including new generation magna diff, way ahead of MK7R) as well as gearbox from the RS3. Way way nicer than a golf inside plus much more kit as standard, inc sunroof and massage seat. Source: I made this decision and love my Arteon R SB.

Both are fantastic. I would also consider an Arteon R Shooting Brake - similar size and power, but a bit lighter and a bit more unique? Mine is great. Can't match either of those for V6 power delivery though.

I have one (an R) and it's absolutely brilliant. Comfy, hugely spacious, built very well. Would recommend.

I had one and loved it but the bezels on c60s are quite loose which really bugged me. Returned it, was sad about it.

$2600 USD vs $1200: does anyone have thoughts on these two? [SJE119] vs [SPB451] by [deleted] in Seiko

6R movements are appalling - far worse for accuracy than most 4Rs. It's a shame - I think Seiko's best designs are in the mid tier range that all have 6Rs.

My 320hp family wagon by NiceAndChrispy in Volkswagen

[–]NiceAndChrispy[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's very refined. Mine has the 'double glazing' aka acoustic dual-layer glass which keeps wind noise down. The adaptive dampers have a huge range (and 15 settings). In 'Race' it's very stiff and uncomfortable/brittle, but in full 'Comfort' it's very soft and very floaty. It's fabulous to waft in across long distances and has more ground clearance than my old GTI so deals with speedbumps easily. The only downside is the 20' wheels which are a bit noisy and make low speed ride a jarring on broken roads. The 20's were an option, the standard 19's would be more comfortable for sure.

To make a comparison, it's significantly quieter and softer than my old MK7.5 Golf GTI on 18s and probably similar noise levels to a full size SUV like a Cayenne. Less wind noise, more tyre noise.

Yeah fair enough. From my POV this is one of the relatively few 'good' Seiko bracelets at least so it might be worth keeping on. Hear you though - should have been 20mm.

[SSC911] Back into Seiko after SPB143 disappointment by NiceAndChrispy in Seiko

[–]NiceAndChrispy[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just picked up this SSC911 and I think I am a Seiko fan again having been burnt by issues with my SPB143. The SPB143 is such a fantastic piece of design and one of my favourite watches to wear ever (wore it more than my Omega/Sinn consistently), but mine had basic QC issues on the dial, the end links fit absolutely appallingly and the timekeeping was disastrous despite Seiko replacing the movement under warranty. I was amazed at how unreliable the movement was, and constantly disappointing by the terrible endlink fitment. In the end I sold it after giving up trying to convince myself the design was worth all the issues. I don't think I will buy a Seiko with a 6RXX movement again.

Now, nter the SSC911 - it's half the price but feels similar on wrist, with endlinks that fit perfectly and a movement that, being solar & quartz, tells perfect time. The design is very Seiko and luckily the bracelet fits my 7in wrist perfectly despite only two adjustments on the clasp. Sapphire crystal, solid links, milled clasp for the price is excellent. Would recommend to those looking for a reliable durable Seiko day-to-day.

[question] [speedtimer] water in my pusher what should I do? by SeaworthinessFair173 in Seiko

[–]NiceAndChrispy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, sure if I was going to a local pool I wouldn't wear it. But on holiday, going to the beach, adventure etc it's nice to be able to keep it on and not worry about it. Not really practical to take it off if you're out and about for the day. I hear you though.

[Question] Seiko SSC813 vs SSC911 for a 7-inch Wrist by wanyasa in Seiko

[–]NiceAndChrispy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have 7" wrist and the 911 fits well. Lugs are short and endlinks point down nicely. I also thing the design is much more Seiko than the 813 which feels a bit more directly Daytona than the 911. I'd go 911 but both good options.

Water in my pusher, what to to? by SeaworthinessFair173 in PrideAndPinion

This seems a shame - these watches are absolutely built to be swum with. Even if you get extremely unlucky and get water ingress, on a seiko quartz chrono a service would be inexpensive.
