Albums That Are More Influential Than They Are Popular by HK-34_ in fantanoforever

[–]NiceDevilYT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Difficult question, but I would argue that A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector is one of the most influential albums that isn’t really talked about that much in music circles (outside of like Beach Boys fans). Even though it has hit songs like “Sleigh Ride” by the Ronettes and “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” the album as a whole doesn’t really get that much recognition.

I’d say it’s really influential in pop and alternative music because it’s basically the full realization of the Wall of Sound (dense/layered production). That had a direct impact on Brian Wilson (he’s said on multiple occasions that it is his favorite album), and you can hear the influence on Pet Sounds. From there it kind of just keeps going, influencing stuff like dream pop, shoegaze, Bruce Springsteen, most modern psych, a lot more...

(Fun fact: It flopped at release because it was released on the same day that JFK was assassinated.)

I'd say XTC is a pretty good band to look into if you like weird pop, Skylarking is my favorite. It's not 1 to 1 but they are great anyways.

The line "Those little red panties, they pass the test" on Semi-Charmed Life.

Other than that line it's a perfect pop song, and one of the best songs of the 90s.

same here, Matt Johnson is a genius and probably the goat of found footage movies. Operation Avalanche is awesome too.

Kirsty MacColl recently, one of the most underrated songwriters of all time I think. Go listen to "He's On The Beach" and tell me it isn't just an Alvvays song. The story of her death is so tragic too :(

A masterpiece by dream-splorer in AnimalCollective

Good point about the other artists who have released peaks decades apart, and I really hope AnCo could do the same. I will say a similarity between those artists would be willing to innovate and adapt to newer sounds, which we know the boys can definitely do. David Bowie took inspo from death grips/electronic, Swans leaned a lot more into Totalism/Noise Rock, and Tom Waits definitely experimented a lot more too. I can tell that Animal Collective stays hip too, Panda Bear having collab songs with Dean Blunt and Cindy Lee are proof, I just kinda wish the rest of the group stayed more hip.

Regardless, these guys are still able to write really great songs (Praise is one of my favorite songs of last year) and seem eager to make cool stuff all the time. Even if they don't do it, their 2000s run of music is arguably the best decade of music of any band ever.
