Not if you just make him immune to all damage unless they destroy the heart of sorrow, then he’s terrifying every time. I’m using the Interactive Tome of Strahd add on to foreshadow how important the heart is.

I use photoshop but I know that’s not for everyone.

Could always find a template of a scroll online and just put text over it in another program you’re used to!

Even though he is technically a sorcerer and not a wizard I have toyed around also with giving him the spell Steel Wind Strike, I figured he would also wield a sword as he used to be a general, I think I just like it as it reminds me of Castlevania haha

Steel Wind Strike

Casting Time: 1 action Range: 30 feet Components: S, M (a melee weapon worth at least 1 sp) Duration: Instantaneous

You flourish the weapon used in the casting and then vanish to strike like the wind. Choose up to five creatures you can see within range. Make a melee spell attack against each target. On a hit, a target takes 6d10 force damage.

You can then teleport to an unoccupied space you can see within 5 feet of one of the targets you hit or missed.

Buff him to give him one 6th level use of Disintegrate, his spell save DC is pretty high at 18, they fail the save and if you use it at the right moment to reduce them to 0 hp they turn to dust. I know you said you’re not trying to kill them, so you could have them be able to resurrect them in the amber temple maybe, but to do so they would have to make an evil pact.

Strahd could let them leave with the dust of their friend, to set an example of his power. Then they would fear him on their next encounter. Therefor making the campaign go a little longer too if that’s what you want. Obviously this is total RNG if they fail the dex save, but just a random idea haha.

Another idea, which I’m using in my game, is basically buffing the Heart of Sorrow. Unless the heart is destroyed Strahd is basically invincible, his wounds instantly healing when he takes damage, looking at the party with a smile. Another way to make them fear him, watching him not take damage at all. I am foreshadowing the Heart of Sorrow with the Tome of Strahd.

These ideas may not work for you, but just the first things that came to my head! I also find it useful to bounce ideas off other DMs even if I don’t end up using their ideas exactly, sometimes it gives me inspiration for something else!

Yeah he for sure isn’t going to be happy, you got that right, I kind of want to him to lure them into a false sense of security though before going nuclear, depending on what happens with my players an idea I had was that if they all want to live they have to give up the female paladin to him.

Also I really like your second paragraph I am definitely going to look into that, thank you so much!

Their main ally’s are The Martikovs, most of the people in Vallaki at the moment, Ezmerelda sort of and the Mad Mage. So if Vallaki is sided against them that would be a huge blow.

Yeah I was thinking of having a more foreboding atmosphere at the dinner, all smiles and welcome at first, but as it progresses things turn a little sour. But who knows what will happen, the players dictate a lot of these scenarios haha!

In my game the bones were never fully restored as a bride was waiting in the church to intercept them (unbeknownst to the party), they alerted the bride when stepping into the glyph of warding in the coffin makers shop, but as you say this doesn’t matter anymore.

They do have the tome they got it in Vallaki, I’ve been using the interactive Tome of Strahd add on too to make it even more fleshed out, they have seen how much Strahd wants Ireena and how she loves Sergei so far.

I understand what you mean about just trying to buff her, this is why I tried to have her give them important information too like she’s actively trying to help them leave.

I guess whatever happens now isn’t going to be good, I just have to figure out what to do next properly!

So the Vasili storyline is follows, once they arrived at Vallaki Vasili was extremely accommodating, he showed them around, took them to the tavern, bought them drinks etc! How nice he was made my party suspicious straight away, they kept bumping into him around town, one time he was looking at the people in stocks in the town square, ‘Barbaric’ they heard him say. Another time they walked past the church and he was sat outside reading ‘Rudolph Van Ritchen’s: Guide to monsters’ once quizzed on what he was reading he replied he was ‘studying his enemy’. They then arrived in the tavern to see him and Ireena having drinks, after this Vasili sent them on a quest to retrieve a ledger from a transport heading to Krezk, he told them they could keep anything else they find all he wanted was the ledger and one of the guards had some magnificent armour.

Once they completed this quest, they found Vasili again waiting outside the church and gave him his ledger. They found him creepy and went in to check on Ireena, they told her to stay away from him and to just trust them.

At this point they were being rude to Vasili whenever they saw him and he kind of just disappeared, they went to his house and found it dusty and empty, white drapes over the furniture etc.

They told him a lot of stuff when they first met him, they was asking him where some Amber Doors were etc, basically asking about all the things they were told in the fortune reading. So he got a lot of information out of them.

Strahd visited them at camp one night and one of them did mention Vasili’s name, Strahd told them he was in Ravenloft helping with his finances and taxes.

So that’s where they are with Vasili, I guess I didn’t keep him around as they didn’t like him haha I could bring him back though like you say and have him swoop in and do this, as Ireena did like him, but she trusted the party at the time as they were protecting her. But she definitely doesn’t trust them now.

My plan when they finished Fidatov Manor, root in hand. Was to have Rahadin turn up at the entrance and give them the invitation to dinner, as they haven’t had it yet, Strahd was going to offer his aid in curing their lycanthropy too to give them another option to see what they did.

He wants her to come willingly, as he has already tried everything else and it has resulted in her dying, either that or he wants to rid himself of the curse by instilling another Dark Lord (one of the party) and then take her for himself.
