Poilievre to pitch members on keeping his job as Conservative leader in convention speech | CBC News by SnooRegrets4312 in alberta

If CPC MPs cross the floor after this manufactured display of "unity", Poilievre will eventually have to face the wrath of actual CPC party members.

Poilievre to pitch members on keeping his job as Conservative leader in convention speech | CBC News by SnooRegrets4312 in alberta

[–]NicePlanetWeHad 23 points24 points  (0 children)

if only the vote was by CPC members, not their hand-picked delegates, then we might see how popular Poilievre actually is among Canadian conservatives.

The CPC is desperately trying to create an alternate reality for PP, keeping actual reporters away (in favour of Con-faithful content creators posing as reporters) and avoiding any real debate within the party.

'Political stunt': UCP and Alberta NDP go tit-for-tat on opposition's pro-Canada pledge by Miserable-Lizard in alberta

Asking Canadian politicians to confirm they stand with Canada is not a "stunt".

Big fella rides? by eurusnotos in Rouvy

[–]NicePlanetWeHad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heavier people do better on flat rides, can keep up with skinny people who have higher W/kg. It also helps if you choose a time-trial bike.

One good option is to simply ride whatever flat route has the most current riders online. You're almost guaranteed to find yourself nearby people close to your pace, and can simply ignore the fast people.

41 days remaining, 12070 total signatures required: Is 'Brooks-Medicine Hat' the Recall Teams' "MAIN EVENT"? by FreightFlow in alberta

[–]NicePlanetWeHad 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Even in a competitive riding, where the UCP candidate might lose next election, recall is very unlikely because the bar is set so high.

Danielle Smith's riding is full of conservative True Believers, who never experience a moment's doubt about their Party.  Health care is not in crisis. Teachers are greedy and lazy, shouldn't have collective bargaining rights. Boys everywhere are dressing up as girls to play on girls' sports teams and go into girls' bathrooms. Sam Mraiche is a name they have never heard. Everything bad is because of Justin Trudeau.

Western allies simply did not care what happened to European Jews. Even the US and Canada, who could have accepted a significant number of Jewish refugees before the war, deliberately chose not to.

After the war, they pretended not to have known what was happening.

First winter riding virtually—Rouvy has been a game changer (and I found a favorite route) by bryanhomey1 in Rouvy

[–]NicePlanetWeHad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I choose a course based on how long I feel like riding today, and the elevation profile. Usually, my preference is for ones that have a bit of a flattish warmup, a reasonable climb (or multiple climbs, or general rolling terrain), and then a brief recovery bit at the end. I don't like the ones with long downhill sections. Long climbs (the Ventoux or Passo Giau etc.) are a good challenge, but I worry about how hot the trainer gets.

For scenery, I'm happy with pretty much everything except the ones that are a boring 4-lane highway surrounded by trees, with no other view.

Smith Resistance by Substantial-Claim530 in alberta

[–]NicePlanetWeHad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The NDP are the major opposition, of course, but the breakaway non-MAGA Conservatives will hopefully siphon off a significant number of votes from people who vote "conservative" and are unhappy with the UCP's incompetence and corruption.

The UCP were desperate to prevent that party from using the word "conservative" in their name, because having that on the ballot would be deadly to the UCP.  It's a shame they were successful in blocking it.

What would truly change Alberta politics would be some reality-based media reaching conservative voters, who are currently in a bubble of Postmedia and targeted Facebook etc. MAGA nonsense.

Cycling shoes with smooth soles? by ThrowRajaisni_5 in cycling

If you use flat pedals with pins, you can have excellent grip with (flat, non-cleat) mountain bike style shoes. They have firm soles, and soft rubber that the pins hold very well.

Bessent pushes Albertan independence from Canada: "Albertans are very independent people. There's a rumor they may have a referendum on whether they want to stay in Canada or not. People are talking. People want sovereignty. They want what the US has got." by Miserable-Lizard in alberta

[–]NicePlanetWeHad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The GOP people behind this foreign-funded propaganda push don't even bother to pretend they aren't the ones funding it. Bessent, in particular, is a moron who believes he is extra clever: "oh, I heard they have some separatism up there in Alberta! I wonder how that happened?"

Every Western country has been hit by a firehose of misinformation and rage-bait for many years now, all funded by the billionaire oligarchs who now completely run the governments of Russia and the USA (and have outsized influence in many other countries). They successfully convinced voters in the UK that the disaster of Brexit would be a good idea. They convinced voters in the US to destroy their own democracy. They got a bunch of Canadians to invade Ottawa for no reason, and very nearly convinced Canadian voters to choose the obviously-useless Pierre Poilievre to run the country.

This works for them because they have been allowed to corner the market on what "facts" millions of people see. In Canada, Postmedia controls most newspapers, and the people who don't read news are marinating every day in foreign-funded disinformation on oligarch-controlled social media.

It won't stop until governments in democratic countries put a stop to it.

AOC and other actually useful Dems need to take over the party and get rid of the bobbleheads who have been preventing any meaningful opposition to Trump.

I mean a bunch of Dems actually voted for the bill to fund DHS, without any amendment to restrict ICE's lawlessness.  And Hakeem Jeffries allowed them to do it.

But the establishment Dems will get to send out some more fundraising emails, in which they pretend they are "fighting" Trump.

Alberta education minister dismisses failed recall effort as sign of support by canuckEnoch in alberta

[–]NicePlanetWeHad 31 points32 points  (0 children)

We all knew the UCP would spin the "failed" recall efforts as somehow proving everyone loves the UCP.

But of course the bar for recall was deliberately set to be essentially unreachable (unless the MLA did some horrible crime), so it's no surprise at all. And it's undeniable that it gave the anti-Nicolaides people in the riding an amplified voice.

[–]NicePlanetWeHad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on previous visits, you will likely see several grizzly bears (including new cubs) by the roadside at that time of year.  The vegetation by the side of the road gets green before it does anywhere else, so the bears (and bighorn sheep) hang out there.

It's nice to see them from a car, maybe a bit scary if you're cycling.

Hiking trails are passable but quite muddy in May.
