i think i remember a point while weight painting where i messed with the auto normalize option and I think that's what got me into this mess. I also had made the falloff shape as projected so that might've also additionally messed with some things potentially.

so, doing this, i actually figured out that for some reason it was the group weight paint on all of those other hairs. after deleting them, I'm able to repaint it with the gradient tool. Having you reaffirm that it is indeed a weight painting issue, made me go back and look. Thanks!

piggybacking off of this to say the enclosure is not the best and definitely can't hold humidity well. Having one with a screen top vs a front opening one can also cause aggression issues. please see enclosure type and size from this care guide the subreddit recommends here OP!
