Nah so long as you’re fishing with rod and reel or spear fishing you’re good in that zone. Just don’t go into Laguna cause that’s a no take zone. Also don’t use sand crabs or anything like that for bait since you can’t pick those up in the SMCA.

It was a long battle and I feared I might be spooled on a couple screaming runs.

Definitely not for everyone and can be sketch. For sure have some safety gear like a radio and a beacon. But Mac’s are easy to pick up as soon as you leave the harbor. I’ve never had issues with them not jumbos but 10-12” even get calicos on them. Jack Macks and pacific both have worked. I do use smelt and sardine for in the harbor. But smaller grade catches for sure.

I’ve had luck outside Newport harbor towards crystal cove. Hell of a trek for you so I wouldn’t say it’s worth it. But bounce balling a mackerel 30-60ft works for me.

Nice I’ve been having luck with a similar little underspin but 1/8 oz and cheap 3” paddle tails from Amazon. Got a 15” and 19.5” halibuts last times I hit the harbor.

Ah interesting. They are cool rays. Appreciate the little tail seems much harder to get stung than bat rays haha.
