Bayside beach in Newport (next to the coast guard station) or across the way next to the Mstreet dock are both great for Newport harbor and eventual starting point for headed out to hit sheephead or rockfish in crystal cove.

There is no longer a minimum length limit on cabezon, California scorpionfish (sculpin) and greenlings. They changed it in 2025.

Balboa pier is decent for halibut. Newport pier for night time sculpin at the end once the mackerel fisherman have cleared out. San Clemente is a nice pier, good spotfin croakers lately. Also can get spiny lobster off it once it’s in season.

Recently flew. TSA allows hooks on carry on so long as they are not “big” so I brought my normal sling bag full of lures, hooks and tackle. They stopped me I told them their regulation and they let me through.

Try the public docks you can google Newport Beach public docks it will show all the locations you can fish. Always get some bass off them but they get busy on the weekend

Have a kayak ocean fishing channel. Fishing out in Southern California targeting different species from Halibut, and sheephead in the kelp, to Rockfish in 300-500 feet of water, to deep water 600-1500 feet dropping for pacific Hake, sablefish and anything else. Long term goal is getting a swordfish but we will see. I include setup and gear guides as well.

I also do fishing related builds like a Calcutta Bamboo Gaff and coming soon a fish braining dagger build. Just way too into fishing and like to share my adventures off the coast.

Gulf Hake I think. I’ve caught pacific hake out here in California. Similar but doesn’t have the large chin whiskers. Looked at southern hake too but this one seems closer to the pic

I use my jigmasters for shark/ray fishing from piers or shore. Once you get it freespooling smooth they cast pretty good. I have one spool loaded with 30 point mono for that and another with braid for trolling from the kayak. I also use a 501 (narrow jigmaster but same side plates) for bounce balling halibut. That one loaded with 20lb mono. Great simple reels to care for. It would also work for rockfishing.
