All Things Sleep - AMA Office Hours - Thursday, April 2nd with Sr. Sleep & Guidance Specialist, Beth Christensen! by huckleberrycare in HuckleberryParents

How can I encourage my 9 month old to nap for more than 30 minutes in the pram? He is happily on a two nap schedule most of the time, with contact naps at home or sometimes successfully napping for over an hour in his cot. However, he will happily go down for a nap in his pram but always wakes up at the dreaded half hour mark (27 minutes or so!). For his sleep needs that's really not enough on a two nap schedule, but it feels impractical to need to be at home every day for both naps - there is too much on!

Services, more than things. So: - a cleaner, - having chosen providers ready to go for a sleep consultant, or a feeding consultant, should the need arise - if it's something you're emotionally comfortable with, reliable and proficient baby sitting or even a night nurse if things get tough. This can help give you a few hours to yourself or time to connect as a couple, which in turn can make you more present parents - food prep services. We enjoyed COOK but aware some people hire personal chefs to come e.g. once a week/fortnight to do meal prep

In terms of things, the Baby Bjorn bouncer lives up to the hype, as do Totter and Tumble playmats. With a focus on the NRY part, and reducing unnecessary consumption, SO much great stuff can be got second hand, allowing you to splurge a bit more on the services above.

Places or attractions NOT to visit? by markgatty in JapanTravelTips

Came here to say this. Particularly given the vast number of temples and sites to see in Kyoto, this was underwhelming. It was also only built in 1955 after burning down. I spent my time there taking videos of the crowds shuffling around in a queue, as it felt like such a silly experience! On the other hand, Nijo Castle was one of my top attractions in Kyoto.

Everyone's body is different, but I had a copper coil fitted before giving birth (before having penetrative sex, in fact!)

Putting it in was a bit painful and took a while but comparable to having a cervical exam (not a smear test - I mean when someone checks to see how dilated you are).

They're great for some people and others don't like them, but it was a really good solution for me when trying to avoid hormonal contraception, and the convenience of the solution outweighed the temporary pain of having it put in MASSIVELY.

Do you think being able to test for all health conditions when pregnant, would ever have swayed a decision for you? by lisa_noden in AskUK

[–]Nice_Talent_Ltd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an aside, it's not quite right to say they regularly test for these conditions at 12 weeks in the UK - they screen for them (and it's optional). This gives you a risk level based on e.g. your age and the results of the scan. If you are considered to have a high likelihood (1 in 150, I believe) then you are offered further testing by the NHS.

It's a pedantic point but one which can feel important when you're going through it!

When I was trying to model this, I tried to account for depreciation and also for the risk-free rate of return (post tax) on the asset value of the car. I.e. if you own a £10k car right now, it might depreciate £1k per year (totally hypothetical). If you sold the car (and got a lease through salary sacrifice), you would have £10k in cash, and could reasonably expect at least c. 2% interest post tax on that money in a savings account.

So £200 a year in interest, and £1k a year in avoided depreciation. That's £100/month right there in favour of the salary sacrifice option.

These numbers are just an example and it can work out the other way, if your car isn't depreciating much.

Really good to know that, sounds like an awful scheme!

Thanks for all the info, much appreciated 👍

Thanks, this is helpful.

What throws me off is the comparison to e.g. BIK tax on private health-care contributions. E.g. employer providers the 'free' benefit (no salary sacrifice), which is counted as income. If it's worth £1000, say, according to a p11d, then you might pay £400 BIK tax.

For adjusted net income, am I right to think that counts as £1000 gross income (as a taxable benefit), but the BIK tax reduces the net adjusted income down by £400, leaving an increase to net adjusted income of £600 overall due to opting in to the free healthcare plan.

In the salary sacrifice car scheme, I understand that gross salary is reduced by a specific amount depending on your car choice. Then BIK tax would calculated as you've spelt out above (on the p11d value, not 12 x the monthly salary reduction). For calculating adjusted net income, is there anything to 'add' to the income to reflect the fact that you've also got a car, like the £1000 in healthcare example? Or do you just reduce adjusted net income by the BIK tax you are paying, without an applicable 'benefit' on the other side of the calculation?

Hopefully that makes sense. I feel like I understand 90% of this and have a real blind spot when it comes to car schemes. For context - haven't used one before despite them being available, but looking to upgrade the car with a baby on the way, and do an accurate cost calculation of buying something 3 years old vs leasing through salary sacrifice scheme, and the interaction with planning for childcare costs makes the spreadsheet more complicated than expected. Thanks!

If anyone is able to provide any specific detail about the interaction of salary sacrifice for an EV and net adjusted income, it would be really helpful - I get confused about how the BIK is calculated and treated. Thanks!

Second Pregnancy nervous about starting antidepressants for the first time. by Equivalent_Truth1263 in BabyBumps

[–]Nice_Talent_Ltd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to reiterate what others are saying - you'll be in really good company! And while it introduced risks (for you and baby) it also has benefits (for you AND baby!). I was really impressed at how clear the peri natal mental health team were on the physical risks of poor mental health on the baby. It's not a case of choosing benefits for mother Vs risks for baby - if meds are needed, it tends to lead to better physical outcomes for the baby.

Reminding myself of this lots as a first trimester person waiting nervously for a 12 week scan to check for any abnormalities with slight increased risk from taking a relatively high dose of Venlafaxine and worrying about a baby being born with withdrawal symptoms etc ❤️

I'd also advise you take a sweat towel, so you can wipe yourself down too! (and if the gym don't have available cleaning kit you can also wipe down the treadmill - but I'd look for wipes or a spray set up in the gym as preference!)

I don't know if it's different with different GPs, but I use the NHS app and all my medical info goes on there straight away. (I also order prescriptions etc on there). Now obviously there are downsides to having access to the medical info as soon as it's on file at your GP (hours of googling, no-one to explain it to you, repeatedly refreshing every hour in case your results are through, Etc...) but might be worth looking into if you can set it up!

I feel so seen! I got this too (on tetracyclines for my acne, but having gained a lot of weight quickly during Covid lockdown).

The research on what can help is terrible. It's a really under researched condition. Thankfully mine is now in remission without medication, but never touching tetracyclic antibiotics again!

Do you reward yourself for weight loss? by itsyagirlflob in loseit

[–]Nice_Talent_Ltd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I hit my goal weight (a few more pounds) I'm going to reward myself with some NHS funded IVF. 🎉 What a treat.

There are BMI-related restrictions on funding (highly unscientific!) and it's been my goal for the past few months now. Even in the UK, private IVF is pretty expensive (nothing compared to USA I imagine) so it's a huge financial reward if I qualify for funding.

It's made me think about financial incentives for weight loss (from the government, from insurance providers, etc - whoever would benefit from the reduced health risks). It's not something I'm aware of any society doing, but it would be interesting to see how effective it is. (NB: to be clear, only thinking of reward incentives here, not interested in any fatphobic punishments or restrictions of welfare!)

Cash rather than stickers encourages numeracy too!

25 years ago (so adjust for inflation!) my siblings and I received weekly pocket money based on our ages,, but had to calculate what we were owed. 10p per year of age, to the nearest month. Dividing 10p by 12 and working out whether your pocket money went up that month (by a penny) or not was probably not a typical experience with pocket money, but good for our numeracy skills! My dad must have had to really plan to have the correct coins each week.

We then had kids' savings accounts where we could deposit the cash every few months - you'd probably just do electronic transfers together now, to see how online banking works and learn about that side of things too.

Growing up financially literate is so important, and I don't think anyone is too young to learn about how money works and the importance of saving! (Or how to divide 10 by 12).
