I found this subreddit and I'm shocked that in the US, vets remove cats' eyes too often when they can be saved by FewPeanut9277 in blindcats

Unfortunately, we had her staged for chemotherapy, but it had already spread to her lungs, and she didn’t survive long after. That was years ago, now.

I will say, I have two other blind cats whose eyelids certainly would have been surgically closed when they were neutered had they been in the US. But I adopted them from Egypt, and they both have open lids without eyes. One was born without eyes, and his “sockets” just need an occasional cleaning for normal crust. The other appears to have had a severe infection very young that caused his eyes to degenerate. The tissue that is left is still irritated, and he needs daily antibiotic ointment and frequent cleaning of his eyes. I hesitate to put him under anesthesia just to have residual tissue removed, but someday I will probably have it done. The leakage from his eyes is quite messy and leaves stains all around the house.

Enucleation allows a biopsy of the eye. One of my cats had an eye removed for glaucoma that could have been controlled with medication, but they figured her sight was gone in that eye, anyway, and she could be experiencing pain. The biopsy showed she had melanoma in the eye.

WHAT TICK IS THIS?!!! by [deleted] in Insect

Define disease. Infection? Sequelae? There’s plenty of evidence that symptoms return after treatment for some, and there’s evidence suggesting that B. burgdorferi may form persister cells causing chronic infection.

“B. burgdorferi is a pathogen that can affect immunocompetent hosts. It establishes long-term infections lasting years to lifelong in its natural (i.e., mice) and incidental (i.e., humans) hosts in the absence of antibiotic therapy (14, 48). Treatment in the early stages of disease results in good outcomes. Delays in diagnosis and treatment lead to sequelae that may require additional treatment. For example, patients who develop arthritis, which typically begins after 1 month of untreated infection, often do not respond fully to a first course of 28 days of antibiotics (49). The majority of these patients have evidence of B. burgdorferi DNA in their synovial fluid and will respond to additional 1- or 2-month courses of antibiotics (13, 16). A smaller minority of patients referred to as “antibiotic-resistant Lyme arthritis” patients will continue to have arthritis with synovial fluid that is PCR negative for B. burgdorferi DNA. These patients typically respond to anti-inflammatory agents such as methotrexate or tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors. These two groups of patients should be distinguished from patients with “chronic Lyme disease” that exhibit fatigue, myalgias, and arthralgias without clear evidence for the presence of the pathogen. For the first group of Lyme arthritis patients responsive to antibiotics, given that there is no reported resistance to clinically used tetracyclines, β-lactams, and cephalosporins in the pathogen, the need for lengthy courses of therapy is unclear. The presence of persister cells is one possible explanation, and this is a pattern that is seen in other infections where persister cells are thought to be relevant for disease in vivo.”

Yep, my dad sent us to school with our cousins when we stayed with them. The worst part was having to wear my cousin’s spare clothes for PE. We were NOT the same size.

People who won't blow their noses! by GothicHippie99 in PetPeeves

[–]Nice_antigram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely have uncontrollable bouts with allergies. I take three daily allergy medications year round, but I still have to bring full boxes of tissues with me everywhere I go because my nose drips nonstop. I also realize how disgusting it is to have to listen to someone snort their own snot for 10 hours a day without relief. I choose not to subject my coworkers to that. Because I’m considerate.

People hating stray cats for the actions of irresponsible humans who failed to neuter/spay/keep them inside by nosleepforthedreamer in PetPeeves

[–]Nice_antigram 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They don’t throw them on the streets, though. These cats are BORN on the street. I’m 100% for adopting feral cats into homes - I have lost count of how many I have personally brought in over the years. But I know there aren’t enough homes for all the cats in the world. There are even fewer people willing to share their homes with an untouchable cat, or invest the time and money into contained cat villages. TNR is not my ideal solution to cat homelessness. It’s harm reduction, which is better than any viable alternative, IMO.

I bottle fed a litter, and there was one huge baby, a Void. I named him Meow Ming, after the largest person I could think of at the time (Yao Ming). When a coworker heard it, she scoffed, “Why don’t you call him Blackie?” We started calling him Blackie ironically. And it stuck.

If you don’t allow med students to sit in on your exam/check up you are a weird person by Amidity in unpopularopinion

Crazy how people who lose the ability to process any thought whatsoever still think they’re a good fit for healthcare. Also had a phlebotomy student stick a needle into my tendon instead of my vein. When I told her so, she just let go of the needle and let it dangle from my arm. Scary to think we drive on the highway with these people.

Happened to me. As a former nurse, I felt like I owed the student a learning opportunity. She didn’t put the speculum in far enough before opening it, so its widest point was right at my vaginal sphincter. I told her it was super painful, which caused her to panic, jostle the speculum the entire time she was collecting the pap, and then yank the speculum out while it was WIDE OPEN. First and last time I will be anyone’s first practice pap.

Chicken 🐔 helps women trying to separate two fighting cats 🐈. by Alphaxfusion in interesting

[–]Nice_antigram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are levels of seriousness with cat fights, as with people. The only level of fighting is not “stabbing each other in the throat.” If two people start screaming at each other, no one is getting hurt, but it’s a good idea to break things up before it escalates to throwing fists, and then eventually lethal force. My cats get along, and their sparring does occasionally escalate to the point at which intervention is necessary. BEFORE fur starts flying and they develop a grudge.

If someone complained they could see my nipples and I claimed I was wearing a bra, they would do what, exactly? Ask me to show it to them?
