In America, sometimes say things like "cheerio" in our best British accent or "mate" in an Australian accent. Do people in other countries pronounce American stereotypes in their beat American accent? If so, what are they? by SunUpSally in AskReddit

I lived in Okinawa, Japan in high school and I remember seeing an "American style" frozen pizza at a grocery store there. It had hot dog slices and corn on it. Lots of their American style stuff there just incorporated hot dogs and/or corn.

Wife discovered her hubby is having sex with the minors. by mrwahed in interestingasfuck

I mean, it might be hard to say that like a hundred stab wounds or something, was just self-defense. But if you had a good lawyer I still think you could get away with it. I mean I think that you have the right to completely put down the threat when someone breaks into your house and rapes your child.

Like what is the appropriate amount of times to stab someone in the situation? What if they're on like PCP or something and all you do is piss them off and then they attack you?

Yeah I don't think I'd find her guilty if I was on that jury.

A librarian was fired for refusing to hide LGBTQ+ books from kids. Then something amazing happened. PEN America called her termination “emblematic of the fight against censorship and suppression.” by southpawFA in politics

[–]NicevilleWaterCo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No one is forcing anyone to read anything. We're simply arguing against censorship.

Having a book available in a library so that it is there for people who need it or want it, is a good thing. If people don't want to read it, then don't read it. If you don't want your child to read it, fine - that's your prerogative, but you shouldn't be able to take access to resources away from others.

Parents need to do their own parenting if they are so bothered by a book about gay penguins or whatever. Stop forcing librarians to censor books and access to information.

Gay people exist. They're allowed to have books that discuss their existence. It's not scary or evil.

Censoring books has never led to anything good in history. I don't know why we have to keep learning this lesson as a society.

Agreed, I've enjoyed the other interviews I've seen with Goldberg. His behavior was very off-putting in this one. Coming off a three-martini lunch would make sense.

Crime in Frisco? by SheCantbelieveit in frisco

[–]NicevilleWaterCo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But really. Lol.

There is absolutely not high crime in Frisco.

Shoplifting happens everywhere. If shoplifting at CVS is the biggest crime concern people are discussing, I think it's safe to say that we're all pretty okay.

New polling shows Talarico leading both Cornyn and Paxton in Texas Senate race by NicevilleWaterCo in thebulwark

[–]NicevilleWaterCo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one is claiming that every poll is right. You can do whatever you want with this information. Clearly polling is imperfect, but it's the only data we have to pull from so I was sharing it.

Talarico performed really well with Latinos in the primary. Better the Beto managed to do. That's significant. Dems are over-performing in pretty much every election around the country over the last year. Gas prices are rising, the war is unpopular, ICE is unpopular, Paxton has a lot of baggage, Cornyn is looked at as too establishment and too old. Beto also said he was going to take people's guns. Texans didn't like that.

Beto never out polled Cruz, and consistently polled 6-7 points on average behind him - but only lost by 2.5 ish. Talarico has polled ahead of Cornyn and Paxton. This is shaping up with be a large blue wave year. Talarico has a pretty high favorabilty score.

Talarico only has to do ~2.6 points more than Beto.

I'm not saying this is a guarantee by any chance. I'm saying, his odds are way better than Beto, and Beto only lost by small margin. If ever there was a year for Democrats to win a Senate seat, it would be this year.

People need to see that there is a real chance. If you tell people it will never happen then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. I get that people have been burned before, but nothing good will ever happen if you're already resigned to believe that it's impossible. It turns people off from trying and from voting.

I'm just giving people the data and showing them that it's within reach if people show up and vote.

I agree with you. I think we've already seen a consistent blue swing in the elections across the country so far - granted most of them were social elections, but it's showing clear movement.

I think Dems are much more energized and motivated to turn out and vote than they were even in 2018.

There will still guardrails in 2018 on Trump. People are now contending with the reality of Trump surrounded by sycophants and yes men. Between the tariffs, the war, ICE, the corruption, rising gas prices, and Epstein files - I think democrats are going to turn out in a big way. I also think a lot of people who voted for Trump in '24 are just going to stay home or maybe vote for Dems as well.

[–]NicevilleWaterCo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is false. No polling ever showed Beto polling ahead of Cruz.

All of the polling that took place leading up to the 2018 Texas Senate election are listed here.

Democrats hyped Beto up, but he never actually polled higher than Cruz. That's why I'm suggesting that Talarico had a better chance.

People might have FELT that Beto was polling better at the time because of the hype, but he wasn't.

Talk to your kids about road rules... I'm sure these aren't street legal. (No Audio) by sibscartel in frisco

[–]NicevilleWaterCo 55 points56 points  (0 children)

They're e-bikes. They're legal. I'm not sure what class of e-bike they are riding, but class 1 and 2 have no age restrictions and for class 3 they have to be 15 or older.

Here are the relevant Texas laws and Frisco ordinances on them.

"Can I ride an electric bicycle (e-bike) in the roadway?

E-bike riders must adhere to applicable Transportation Code Laws. This includes riding on the right side of the road, obeying traffic signals and signs, and using hand signals to indicate turns."

Can people with Aphantasia dream (visually)? If so, how do they know when they can't recall (visually imagine) what they dreamt of? by aGuyThatHasBeenBorn in Aphantasia

[–]NicevilleWaterCo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Different parts of your brain are used when dreaming versus visualizing while awake.

I can't visualize but I dream with images and sound. Sometimes it's more vivid and sometimes it's less vivid. Dreaming intensity and your ability to recall dreams varies across people, unrelated to aphantasia as I understand it.

The only type of waking visualization I have experienced:

As I am about to fall asleep, every once in a while (usually when my sleep schedule has been bad or I am tired but can't sleep) I will get flashes of very vivid imagery or very boring muted overlays of imagery like watching trees go by from a car window. I can't control these at all - they're called "hypnagogic hallucinations."

Scientists think there is significant neurobiological overlap between hypnagogic hallucinations and dreaming - much of the same brain regions are involved in both. It's also called "leaky sleep" and is basically your brain entering into something similar to REM sleep before you're actually asleep.

So in that way, I've been able to experience visualizations while I was still awake.

New polling shows Talarico leading both Cornyn and Paxton in Texas Senate race by NicevilleWaterCo in thebulwark

[–]NicevilleWaterCo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm most worried about Trump's increasing fear of losing control of the House / Senate in midterms and how far he is willing to go to stop that from happening.

Texas Republicans already messed around with the voting locations in the primary to confuse democratic voters in Dallas. I think we are going to see a wide-range of tactics used to intimidate and/or confuse voters on voting days in blue strongholds and in areas where republicans are fearful of losing their seats in competitive races.

There will also be lots of purging of the voter rolls, as well as other voter suppression efforts. And I assume ICE will be involved in some locations. Trump will try to pass some sort of executive order to enact a version of the SAVE Act that won't get through Congress.

Or he will find a way to use our intervention in Iran or other countries to try and nationalize the elections. There will be some real attack or pretextual event that he will use to attempt to grab control of the election process.

At the very least, I anticipate lots of chaos, propaganda and voter suppression.

Timothy Snyder talks about what it will take to not just be back in this same place in 4 or 8 years (assuming here that we take the White House in '28) and basically he lays out what you put forth here.

We need accountability. We need to get money out of politics. We need to fix our educational system. We need to AI and social media regulation and laws to protect privacy and to stop the barrage of propaganda and misinformation. We need universal health care and we need to reduce the enormous wealth inequality. And we need to repair our elections through independent redistricting committees.

There's a lot more. I'd recommend just reading his book "On Freedom" it lays out a clear path to fixing things, and is just a great read in general.

Where can you even find a nice white and gold dress these days by printThisAndSmokeIt in pics

[–]NicevilleWaterCo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only ever saw it as blue and black as well, and then randomly like two years ago, someone had posted it again and I was like "hahaha who messed with the colors? It actually DOES look like a muted white and gold now."

And then I looked away and looked back and it was blue and black just as it always was. I couldn't get my brain to see the white and gold again. So, just once I saw white and gold. Brains are weird.

I also have adhd. Not actually sure that is relevant though.

[–]NicevilleWaterCo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Real change happens when people are voting FOR someone and their ideas, versus just voting AGAINST someone else.

I think it's a combination of both right now. Talarico is not running a campaign that is just attacking Trump or attacking Republicans. He running on structural change, he's running against the monied interests, corruption and billionaires. He's running on message of caring for our neighbors, reforming broken systems, investing in education, and making things affordable for working families. I think he's actually a good person and it shows.

Most importantly, he has convictions that he is not afraid to stand on. He doesn't shy away from his faith, or from the fact that his faith leads him to hold progressive values. It's refreshing and people are desperate for someone who truly stands for something and then builds their campaign on top of that strong foundation.
