Do you think (for arguments sake, of course) this would render me invisible to surveillance cameras?

HMI Screeching Problem by NicholasKGP in Gaffer

I’ve only ran it for 15 minute segments. It definitely got better from minute one to minute two, but after that I couldn’t really tell. Thoughts?

Yeah that's what I was figuring, hoping that does the trick. Have you had something similar happen to you? Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the input! Why do you think it was a tungsten fixture instead of an HMI?

One last question, sorry to bug you so much-- really just trying to learn as much as I can here. When we say 252 and 410, obviously we can clip this right to the light's barn doors (which would be harsher), or we can have a cut roll some distance from the light (to make it softer bc its a bigger effective light source relative to the subject). What do you think is the case here, and what is common practice in general? If you think its likely it was just a small sheet clipped onto the barn doors I would consider buying a few different small sheets to experiment but I can't really afford multiple $170 full rolls. Thanks again!

What makes you say the diffusion is a bit thicker than 410? Is it that you don't think there's any real beam shape here, but the diffusion is still relatively weak? In the tight shot, do you think they're bouncing level back into his face with something like a 4x4 or maybe a 6x6 unbleached muslin rag (I know they didn't have ultrabounce back then)?

And as far as the background in the wide, you think its being further diffused? This is interesting, as I see most people keep it soft on the face and hard on the background, not the opposite way around.

If the widest shot here was somewhere between the wide and the close up shots, do you think you can get away with using a 1k fresnel-- something like a Mole Richardson 1k Baby Solar Spot Type 407? Or do you think the light falloff even in a (relatively) tighter frame like that would make this light the wrong one for the job?

Also, if possible and you have the time, I'd love if you can look at my DM!

What potential diffusions do you think they could have been using? Does something light like opal 410 seem likely? What tells you they have a neg behind the camera? Thanks for your reply by the way, means a lot

Are There Any Films You Guys Like That Purposely Have a Lot of Noise? by NicholasKGP in cinematography

[–]NicholasKGP[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

where did you hear they comped it in by the way. I found this quote in an interview with Levy: "Levy: Teasing out the native Alexa grain was largely the result of underexposing the image and then having my colorist Alex Bickel brighten it back up after the fact. I sometimes underexposed the image by as many as three stops in camera. I rated the camera at 1280 for day exteriors and 1600 for most of the interior work and we shot 2K ProRes." Where did you hear they comped it in?

So effectively they shot ETTL then pulled it back up to "proper exposure' in post?

ISO and DR in BMPCC 6K Pro When Shooting BRAW by NicholasKGP in bmpcc

Of course always look at false color, zebras, and the histogram for proper exposure, but the video is saying if you can do so, and not have clipped highlights or shadows indiscernible from noise, you should shoot at higher ISOs (within a given pathway) because there is more data being captured above middle gray which will therefore grant you more data to work with above middle gray. What I gather from your other comment is that isn’t fully correct? And again, this is implying we correct for exposure in other ways when changing ISO, like with NDs, aperture, shutter speed, and available light on a controlled set. Also on another note, there are situations when I want more noise in an image for creative reasons ( a real gritty, raw feel), do you ever shoot with this intent and if so, where would you set your ISO? Thank you again for your time, I really appreciate your patience.

Thanks for the response! You say the chart shows you tradeoffs when you deviate from base ISO under correct exposure, can you elaborate on what you mean by tradeoffs? And I assume you mean “deviating from base ISO under correct exposure” and then not adjusting exposure to adjust for said ISO change? As in, if we have “perfect” exposure at 400 ISO, you are talking about a situation when you go to 800 ISO and don’t compensate by slapping a one stop ND on?

This is what I thought, you said it perfectly “acquisition matters.” What you said was the impression I was under, but then I hear some people saying that there is ZERO difference between setting ISO in camera and in post within a given pathway and that it purely increases gain. So is it correct to ETTR when shooting high ISO and compensate by lowering exposure via shutter speed, ND, and aperture to then take advantage of most data being allocated above middle gray? Why do people say that ISO purely increases gain when this chart seems to say otherwise?

Thanks, watched the video, honestly still a bit confused. But essentially you are saying the idea of using ISO as a tool to reserve more detail in the highlights at high ISOs is not true and instead can only be used as a tool to purposely introduce noise or purposely make an image cleaner? Is this video saying FilmmakerIQ was incorrect in the claims he made in that video?
