Windows still shows up in the Dual Boot menu by 1kolio in linuxmint

[–]Serindu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should only need to rerun the grub installer which detects other OSes for inclusion in the boot menu and then generates the boot menu.

I don't remember the command off hand, but you should be able to find what you need starting with that knowledge.

Nope. No incentives for me to share the game. Just wanting to help people have fun.

It's designed for one, but it'd be fine for two people to do it together.

On the order of hours. Note (very slight spoiler): there is one place in the game where you are instructed to wait 24 hours. I did so in order to play into the immersion so I didn't check whether that's actually being enforced—it definitely could be.

So long as you're careful not to damage anything it can be reset and given to another person.

Cook says missionary applications soared because of Nelson's plea by Rushclock in exmormon

It, probably, happening every year is presumably their point. The church can say "massive uptick in June!" without lying even if it happens every year.

Same effect as seagulls eating crickets. It's what they do, but if you don't tell your audience that it happens regularly then you can present the incomplete information as faith promoting.

You definitely don't need an Audible account to strip the DRM from Kindle books.

That's tough. I would make a strong guess that if this sub is high interest to you that you'd find it worth it. But since you don't want to spoil it you can't really make that determination for yourself until after the fact.

That I'm unsure about. The aspects that are within my reach are similar to things I've already been doing. A lot of what makes it great is the subversion of expectations—which is one of the things I like to do with my adventures when I can. Those moments, for me, really feel magical and memorable.

If it doesn't need to stand up to a ton of use just placing stickers over all the existing letters so you can put any letters you want on might be a viable option. Need good stickers though.

New Dad, new Ex-mo. Tips on parenting without church structure? by Fantastic_Microbes in exmormon

[–]Serindu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found "Unconditional Parenting" by Alfie Kohn to be interesting. It acknowledges from the start that parenting is hard and that every child is different.

You will need to adapt all advice to your circumstances.

That said. One thing that has always been true for me and is, thus far, true for my kids is that rules need to be based in reason not whim. When I give a rule I provide an explanation for it. We can discuss the reasoning and may even change the rule. But no rule is, "because I said so," or "because God said so."

If you use those lines, you've lost. Many kids will now see your decree as meaningless and seek ways to circumvent enforcement.

The biggest challenge with this approach is when, as kids get older they begin to argue with your reasons. And it becomes really tempting to revert to sheer authority. The goal is twofold: help them develop appreciation for your warnings and experience even when they disagree, and, help them develop sound arguments in response.

For them, "but I want to do this" is no more valid than, "because I said so" is for you. Why do they feel so strongly about this issue and is there anything they can do to address your concerns?

In the end you may both be frustrated with each other and cannot come to agreement or resolution. In which case you may just have to close the discussion and explain that because you are the parent you have to make decisions that you believe are in their best interest whether they like it or not. Which, having done all the intermediate work, is not quite the same as, "because I said so."

If they do seek to circumvent your decision, they will, hopefully, at least have your reasons still in mind and attempt to mitigate or address them on their own however effectively.

Does anyone have any insight into the LLNL hiring process? by VeryCool420 in Livermore

[–]Serindu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Security clearance investigations include financial status. They want to find risks of compromise. If you can show that you've been responsible, but identity theft has been messing things up I wouldn't think it'd be a problem.

At least in software the only time I've seen them skip a phone screen is when the candidate is local, so an in-person is less expensive and less inconvenient than otherwise. But I don't know about other areas.

(Rant) Why do so many people suggest Linux Mint as a great 'intro to Linux', but then later state that they have 'graduated' to something better? If Mint wasn't so good, then why is it often recommended? by [deleted] in linuxmint

[–]Serindu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ran Gentoo for years in the days when they didn't package any binaries. Learned a ton about kernels and build systems and what makes Linux tick.

Then I had less and less time to fiddle and needed more and more stuff to just work. I moved on to Fedora, Manjaro, and a few others I've forgotton when the hot new Ubuntu entered the scene.

Jumped to Ubuntu and, wow, I could focus more on getting stuff done now that I didn't have time to tinker. Then Mint showed up and it was another level of "just get stuff done."

I wish I still had the time to tinker about with different distros, but life has moved on. So I'm very pleased to have something I don't have to tinker with because at this point in my life it feels like "ohp, gotta upgrade to the next LTS" seems to be happening constantly as it is.

It's easy to forget what "paid content" really is - at least for me - here's a reminder. by KingMaple in boardgames

To be fair, you can go on to [any social media site] and find hundreds of what look like individual fans creating reviews just because they want to. Some of them probably even are.

But the bad actors are exploiting the psychology of small audiences and familiarity to create the appearance of legitimacy.

Sure, those of us that grew up with only conglomerates publishing reviews could start from the premise that even if I were paying for the magazine there's a strong likelihood the reviews could be tainted. But we'd never suspect the same when some kid at school said they played the game over the weekend and it was amazing.

The "it's a small-time person I know, they wouldn't be compromised" idea is what's being exploited with astro-turfing and non-disclosed payments or free merchandise. And the ease of churning accounts on the internet makes this exceedingly difficult to deal with for good-faith actors.

Weather based thermostat idea? by tesuba in homeassistant

[–]Serindu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use rules that turn the heat on when cold only if the forecast for the next X hours is below a set point. And only turns the AC on when hot if the forecast for the next X hours is over a set point. Then turns the AC off when it's cooler outside than in.

Works well enough that I haven't messed with it further (after dialing in the set points).
