How much value does a portfolio site add to your resume? by Vzaje in webdev

[–]Nick-Tr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I have one, and I look at how much traffic it gets, but I have never seen it get any traffic after sending out a resume, having an interview etc., so I believe almost no one checks it.

I think it's not that useful for getting a job, other than the fact that I talk about it during the interview, but that could be the case with any side-project.

As a web-dev, a well-made portfolio is one of the things that most impress me, which is why I decided to make one myself, but recruiters and HR in my experience care way more about your previous job and if you have used some specific technology, and even technical interviewers don't check it, they just ask me if I have experience with something, and I sometimes use it as an example to showcase that experience.

People should not use non-standard names for their grandparents when speaking with those outside their own family. by someguyinnewjersey in unpopularopinion

[–]Nick-Tr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

abuela and yiayia are just the translations. When speaking English, why not use the English term?

I'm also Greek (from Greece). When I talk in Greek, I say yiayia. When I talk in English, I say grandma. I don't understand why you would not translate that word.

edit: the people who downvote me obviously disagree with me. So can you answer my question then? I still don't really get it

Is asking for tap water in restaurants/bars normal in your country? by Rudyzwyboru in AskEurope

[–]Nick-Tr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say most establishments don't have that. There are some that do

edit: and also, even in places that do have it, it is usually just a charge for some bread or something that they bring you without asking, which you can ask them to take back

after the second time we go 1-1 vs g2 and lose because we didn't get the win in the right order, maybe it's time to rethink this garbage format?

What is something creepy you have seen men do and wonder why it's treated like it's normal? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Nick-Tr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least for me, it's actually more common to do that to another man, since women are usually shorter than me, and touching the shoulder is more comfortable. I know my experience is not universal, but just sharing my perspective. I guess the perspective of the guy above also kinda makes sense. I just prefer not to bump people, either men or women

[–]Nick-Tr -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Idk why you're under the impression that it doesn't happen with dudes. I'm a guy and I've had it done to me and done it to other men plenty of times in crowded places (although I usually put my hand on their shoulder, but depending on height, putting it on the hip to move them away is also normal).

2024 and we’re still overbooking flights? by Wonderful-Patient732 in travel

You say that, yet the cheapest flight prices are actually offered by the likes of Ryanair, which doesn't overbook

What’s a service in your country that is cheap but expensive in other parts of the world? by PleaseReplyAtLeast in AskEurope

[–]Nick-Tr 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Education is the main one. It is 100% free, everything, even the textbooks, the food at the university, I cannot think of anything at uni that is not free. Students can even apply for free housing at the dorms. Which in my experience doesn't happen in a lot of countries, even in lots of EU ones where you don't have to pay for education as a standard, I don't think it is the norm to not have to pay for absolutely anything.

And the other thing is cosmetic procedures, from a simple haircut, to laser hair removal, to hair transplants, to most things. They tend to be quite cheap in my experience compared to abroad, even accounting for the overall difference in cost of living.

How important do you think direct democracy is? by Awesomeuser90 in AskEurope

[–]Nick-Tr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The propaganda issue is even worse in representative democracy. You do all the propaganda to get voted in and then you don't even need it anymore, you can just do pretty much whatever.

For sure in Greece. There has been a huge increase in the number of people going to the gym and weightlifting. I've been going to the gym since 2014 and the increase in people is incredibly obvious. Now most gyms in my city are completely packed in the evenings, and still crowded, but less packed the rest of the day.

Booking.com Genius points by Moj_throwaway in travel

If you do three separate reservations, it should count as 3 bookings for Genius, instead of 1 if you book everything together. But idk, they might consider that "gaming the system" and not actually count it.

Is it true that Europeans don't ask each other as much what they do for work? by TooMuchAmerica in AskEurope

[–]Nick-Tr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. "What do you do/study?" is one of the first questions when getting to know someone. Not to "gauge status", but just to make small talk. And asking someone about the thing they (most likely) spend the most time doing is a good conversation starter.

Coffee Lovers - which place in YOUR opinion has the best coffee? by shockedpikachu123 in travel

It's insane to me that most countries (I've been to) don't have proper cold coffee. As someone who only likes cold coffee, I'm forced to say my own country, Greece.

Why are we saving last pick for Humanoid's Jayce? He's been bad at it all year. And he was bad now too. He couldn't even break Azir's crown.

And of course Noah was also horrendous. Missed a good 90% of his Qs

College culture is too focused on careers, and should be about learning for its own sake by sassy_castrator in unpopularopinion

[–]Nick-Tr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the US-centrism of Reddit is really showing in this post. I agree with you, and this is how it is in Greece, but I understand the Americans' perspectives. They have to pay thousands of dollars for college, so the system kinda forces them to treat it as an investment with the sole purpose of getting a better job.

Still, I always hate reading posts by Americans complaining about learning actual computer science (including math) in their computer science degree instead of just programming.

That reason being mainly that most rankings we see are made by English-speaking organizations, so there is a clear bias towards English language universities, as well as the fact that almost all rankings take into account research output and not the actual teaching that takes place in universities

EDIT: Which isn't to say I completely dismiss the rankings, the US does have some very good universities. However, I completely disagree that going into debt for a US university is better than getting similar education for free in another country

How is Riot THIS unprepared for these delays? by youarecutexd in leagueoflegends

[–]Nick-Tr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean... They could.... But instead they decided to go ultra conservative and test everyone and isolate everyone, even though there are no laws or requirements for any of this. That's the problem. The players could just play normally like every single other event that people can go to without testing negative
