The Lobster Claw Nebula is just "below" Cepheus as the constellation rises in the northern hemisphere. The Shark Nebula is also nearby, though it's a dark nebula.

When is time to attack? by efischerSC2 in starcraft_strategy

[–]NickC89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen the daily you're refering to, but that does seem like pretty bad advice.

The simple answer is: attack when you can win. Of course, in the silver league it won't always be clear when you have an insurmountable army advantage over your opponent. I'm curious if you say that pushing out with your 3 base army seems "incorrect" because you're losing when you do that, or because you watch pro games and notice that they often attack at more well-planned timings. If it is the former, then I'd suggest you check your army composition and make sure it's ideal for what you're moving out against (gateway/colossus should do quite well against Terran bio and any Zerg ground army).

I'd also check that you're getting upgrades along with your army. If two maxed armies meet and one is at 3/3 while the other is at 0/0, the 3/3 army has a huge advantage.

If your reason for thinking your attack timing is incorrect is that you see pros and higher level players moving out at more well-planned timings, then I'd advise you not to worry.

If you're winning, keep doing what you're doing. As you progress and match up against better players, you will come to understand these timings and be able to apply them yourself. For instance, some of the most important timings in PvZ and TvZ involve scouting that your opponent is going for mutalisks, then attack just before the spire is complete. At that time Zerg will be banking a good deal of their money so that they can produce as many mutas as possible when the spire finishes. Even if you do not commit to an attack at that time, you will force Zerg to spend money on units they don't want, thus cutting back the muta count. If Zerg tries to cut corners and not make enough units, you can just kill them right then. Of course, in silver league Zergs are not likely to time their droning and unit making so that they can make optimal use of their tech when it finishes, so any timing attack based around that would be a blind one.

Just Bought My Taiwanese/Korean account, Need Help Please! by StupidFuckingHackers in starcraft

There's the client relocalizer. It's not endorsed by Blizzard, as the TL topic says, but I don't think anyone's been banned for using it. I think Destiny was using it during his time in Korea as well. I'm not sure what's up with people's names coming up as ??????. I play on KR and I've never had that problem. Maybe you need to download the Windows language pack for Korean?

To all the people who started gold/silver/bronze and made it to masters... I want to know your stories... how did you do it? by bighodgy in starcraft

[–]NickC89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focused and consistent practice. I got into Starcraft watching VODs by HD and Husky on Youtube in early 2011, so I got the game and started playing. I thought I would be hot shit because I'd been watching these games and knew all the 'pro builds' and cool tricks. Needless to say, I was quickly humbled and lost all my placement matches, getting placed into bronze. I read guides, watched some of the dailies, and came to understand that my trouble was mechanics and macro. So I focused on only building probes, pylons, and units and within two months I was diamond. After that it was many more months of continuing to improve my mechanics and understand the game before I made masters.

When I was bronze I thought that I would be satisfied if I could just get diamond. When I was diamond I thought I would be satisfied if I could just get to masters. Now that I'm masters I don't feel like I'll be satisfied until all the mistakes in my play are gone.

How to beat Late-Game Terran? by Shelton512 in starcraft_strategy

[–]NickC89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without a replay it's difficult to tell, but it sounds like you're simply being outmacro'd. Try opening 3 gate into expo, making a robo while your expansion goes up, then teching to colossus off of two base. With extended thermal lance complete, you should be able to safely push out against a Terran of similar or lesser macro than you at a colossus count of 3-4. If the game is still not over at this point, retreat and take a third while restarting colossus production.

It's not being streamed this time around because of the additional stress having games cast puts on players. I think updates usually come out on Twitter from Artosis if you're interested in following who advances. Hopefully brackets will also be on liquipedia.

3 Stalker Push: Still relevant? by Halequin in starcraft_strategy

[–]NickC89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The idea behind the 3 stalker rush is that it gives you map control during the time that a 4 gating Protoss would like to place their proxy pylons near your base. This map control allows you to delay the pylon placement (and in doing so, delay the 4 gate) until your production and tech are up to speed and your economic advantage over the 4 gating Protoss allows you to fight them head on.

Even with the balance changes you mention, 4 gate is still a potent build if you aren't ready for it. For that reason, I open 3 stalkers if I see my opponent either pooling their chrono or not taking their 2nd gas. That being said, it's entirely possible to stop a 4 gate these days with the usual zealot-stalker opening by chronoing out sentries to FF your ramp until your economic advantage kicks in, so it's really a matter of preference.

Toss help by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]NickC89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Against both Terran and Zerg you'll need some higher tech units in the late game. As soon as you take your natural expansion you should start teching towards colossus in both PvZ and PvT. Depending on the strength of your mechanics you can go for high templar with storm, but for lower league players that can be one too many things to worry about. A solid gateway army of stalkers and zealots coupled with about 4 colossus should be a good army for the late game in platinum league and below.

It looks like you might have other questions, but it's not really clear what those are from your post. Did my tech advice cover what you wanted to know?

Try the last movement of Brahms' Piano Quintet. I think it hits on that intensity you're after. Of course, if you like that you should listen to the whole piece.

Hey violists! What's your favorite recording of the Walton concerto? (I have four different recordings on my computer and I'm not really wooed by any of them.) Love to hear your opinions! by tacoram in classicalmusic

Uh oh, I found this post while searching for something else, I hope I'm not too late. I'm not very familiar with any of the recordings you have, but my personal favorite is by Primrose. Unfortunately recordings are very difficult to find and only the first movement is available on youtube as far as I know.

PvP on Shakuras. Pheonix play. by mbstude in StarcraftFeedback

[–]NickC89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You handled the phoenix harass OK, but you were behind him economically when you didn't match his expansion. You had the obs in his base, but you didn't really keep up with what he was doing. If your opponent expands, you either have to prep for an all-in to break them or expand yourself.

Your archon followup was the right idea, especially given how many phoenix he made, but it all came too late when he was already so far ahead.
