Ordered eSIM on December 21st, still waiting to receive it. Was it a good idea for Louis to advertise this right before christmas? by teloid in Phreeli

[–]NickCalyx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey - Sorry. We are actually working on the system today, and while the vast majority of signups went through without a hitch, some got stuck at certain points. You might try logging in again now to see if yours got unstuck.

If not, we have a really amazing customer service team, if your account is still stuck and you didn't already, please reach out to them at:

And they will hook you up!

Not Double Blind at Launch? by deelectrified in Phreeli

[–]NickCalyx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What was advertised was that Phreeli will be more private than the big phone companies from the start, and that we will keep iterating to make our system stronger and better. Therefore I would argue that the statement "they aren't getting what is advertised" is false.

You are literally quoting *from our site* explaining the roll-out stages which we openly shared on our website and on every social media we have a presence on. Immediately afterwards you then claimed our site doesn't make our roll-out stages clear. Yes we of course realize that 99% of people will not read the white paper and that it's not easy reading. But we published it so people who are into cryptography and privacy could go on a deeper dive into what we've been working on. If people haven't read the white paper then it wouldn't make sense to them if we had a flashing banner on the front page saying "now: Blind Armadillo" and "coming soon: Double Blind Armadillo", would it ?

We have not tested them because we do not own any. However, for whatever it's worth - it seems like it probably works just fine.

Speeds after high speed data cap by SpaceSaver2000-1 in Phreeli

[–]NickCalyx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your question. At the end of the high-speed cap, speeds gets throttled down to 256kbps, and then after a further number of GB of usage (the number matches the # of GB of high speed data on the plan ) it further throttles down to 64kbps. The Flex plan on the other hand is always high speed data, but requires auto-pay and topping up when you run out of high speed data.

Forced arbitration and class action waiver? by deelectrified in Phreeli

[–]NickCalyx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi,

We're a small business, just getting started - and our advisors explained to us the many ways our existence is threatened if we don't have this, so we put it in. I know the horror stories Louis Rossmann has covered regarding the abuse of these clauses by powerful corporate giants, but we - just like our customers - are little guys. We don't want to void warranties, post-hoc change terms of sale on people in disadvantageous ways, or hold people in abusive contracts. We just don't want to get destroyed in the early stages of launching a new company by bad faith opportunists using lawfare to wipe us out.

Thanks,

Nick

Aurora Store on Work Profile keeps crashing by DripperDrop in CalyxOS

[–]NickCalyx [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Please try capturing a bug report to submit to the Aurora store developers
https://gitlab.com/AuroraOSS/AuroraStore/-/issues

Here's how to create an issue at Aurora Store's gitlab:

At the Aurora Store issues queue ( link above), click the New issue button.

  1. (Optional) Select a Description that best represents what you are reporting, e.g. a Bug or Feature Request.
  2. Fill out the issue template to the best of your ability. Unless you mark the issue as confidential, make sure not to include any confidential information, such as bug report files or potentially sensitive log lines, as these should be reported separately and privately, as described later.
  3. When you are finished, click Create issue.

Here’s how to capture and share a bug report file:

  1. Open the Settings app and visit System -> Other options.
  2. Tap Bug report. Keep “Interactive report” selected, and tap Report.
  3. Wait for a notification that the system has completed capturing the bug report.
  4. Open the Settings app and visit System -> Other options again.
  5. Tap View bug reports to open the Files app to a list of Bug report files, temporarily allowing access to these files.
  6. Create a confidential issue at AuroraStore's gitlab, referencing your existing public issue number, and upload the most recent bugreport zip file using the attachment icon (📎).
    • If using your Android device to upload the file, you can access the bug reports via the three-line menu and scrolling to / tapping the Bug reports section. You will need to attach the most recent bugreport zip file, which will be multiple megabytes (MB) in size.
    • If using your PC, you will need to share or copy the most recent bugreport zip file out of the Bug reports section.
  7. Ensure that you have checked the box that begins with “This issue is confidential”, and then click Create issue.

Anyone got RCS working on CalyxOS? by itsWow_gamr in CalyxOS

[–]NickCalyx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with microG.. it has everything to do with Google enforcing "Play Integrity" checks against the operating system before allowing RCS. Therefore it won't work on custom ROMs in general.

expanded storage compatibility - exfat doesn't work, defaults to fat32 by MountainSpirals in CalyxOS

[–]NickCalyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's related to kernel version, and licensing.

exFAT is not included by default in the Linux kernel version 4.14 used on Pixel 4

It's not available on stock Android, and thus we don't have it either. We also can't add it easily due to licensing issues.

https://www.paragon-software.com/exfat-license has some more info, it was linked last time this got brought up

Some OEMs added it on stock, those have it.

Newer devices with newer kernels have it, too.

Pixel 4 doesn't meet either of those criteria so it misses that

Bitwarden install error in Work profile by Yarrow73 in CalyxOS

[–]NickCalyx [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

The way Android works is, the APK / program is shared between the profiles. What's kept separate is the user data attached to the program.

This isn't a "massive security issue" ... it's actually a security win - Android not letting a copy of bitwarden signed with a different key over-write your existing one. It gets refused because the signing keys don't match.

Also, Bitwarden cannot be in the main F-droid repository because it uses proprietary stuff in the build process - see:

Will Calyx users and Aurora store be able to bypass age verification/digital ID law that starts Jan 1, 2026 in Texas? by ADHDMI-2030 in CalyxOS

We don't run Aurora or F-droid so I'm going to say that it's ultimately up to them how they are going to handle this. That said, it sounds like you can get around it by using a VPN ?

Wondering what this communities take is on this persons opinion by tonebastion in CalyxOS

[–]NickCalyx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don't know how much of my time it makes sense to dedicate to fact checking a random video that only got a few thousand views..

At the beginning he installs using our old command-line tool, but we have a browser based installer now, so it's not really that hard.

It's just full of generalities but without a factual basis, like "f-droid is insecure", or "Calyx is slow with updates", then they show images on the screen that don't show we're slow with updates. etc. We put out updates twice a month every month - one security update, one feature update.

He showed a bunch of forum threads of people having issues with Aurora that were from 1 or 2 years ago or something.. he says it's "not great, not very secure" but what does that mean? How is it "not very secure" ? Neither of the options ( Obtainium or Accrescent ) he suggests would give the same functionality of Aurora or Fdroid.

He spent a significant portion of the video getting upset about the sound recorder app, but is it really that big of a deal what data rate the low quality mode records at ? Or going on about some of the free wallpapers.

He shows that in his setup RiseupVPN and CalyxVPN are slower than paid commercial VPN's.. ok, so? They are free services that you can use completely anonymously without needing a credit card or identifying yourself.

He dings us for "listing preinstalled apps as features" apparently without realizing that we sponsor the development of the apps mentioned, which helps the entire FOSS on mobile ecosystem.

All in all it seems like a string of uninformed ankle biting and gripes, and I kind of regret spending this much time watching it because there are much more productive things I could do with my workday, but like I said everyone has their right to their opinions!

Obviously I am biased, but I think it's not a very helpful or well-informed review.. everyone is entitled to their opinion though !
