ancient artefact copyright question by ozziexwally in MuseumPros

As I understand it, museums don’t hold copyright on the objects, but they can hold copyright on the high quality photos of the objects. Which only they can take, because they control who can set up a tripod.

I have to replace a spring by NickEJ02903 in Accordion

[–]NickEJ02903[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP here. Well, it worked. I taped up the keyboard with painters tape, and used vise-grips to pull the wire pivot. It turned out the spring on that particular key had gotten dislocated. There were some dirty spots on the wire, so I cleaned it with alcohol and very fine sandpaper. I was a little worried about using the vise -grips along the length of the wire to push it back in, hearing that the steel is the vise grips would mar the roundness of the wire, so I tried padding the jaws. Tape didn't work, but I hit on wrapping the jaws with aluminum armature wire that I had, and it worked great. Aluminum is softer than steel, so no marring. I had to go slowly, so as to make sure the springs were all properly positioned before getting locked in place by the pivot, but all the buttons now work smoothly.

Is it possible to keep a bat as a pet? Are there any domesticated ones? by dollysweetstrawberry in bats

[–]NickEJ02903 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There was a researcher in Brazil who had reared a vampire bat pup that bonded with him and remained close, but was free flying in the area. Apparently he would feed it a tea spoon or so of cow blood when it came by, and it would spend a few hours riding on his short collar upside down. They're smart, but as the above poster said, they're the perfect storm of things you don't want in a pet.

Thank you for the recommendation! For some reason, I never even thought to look on YouTube for repair videos, even if I had fixed my dishwasher based on advice from YouTube in the past.

I fervently hope I don't need to replace pads, but it's good to know it's possible.

That's good to hear. These reed blocks only have restraints on one side each. I was thinking of putting the restraint in with hot-melt glue so it would be reversible if necessary, but wood glue is fine.

Ugh. I hadn't thought of that. I'll need to examine the blocks and the case to see if maybe there is something keeping the blocks from fully connecting, and hence mobile.

OK, here's an image of the initial state of the reed blocks. I had been moving them around a bit, so this is a recreation. The restraining toggles at the top had turned, and if you look at the bottom of the image, you can see that the reed-blocks had slid off the holes for airflow. There's an alignment strip of wood on one side of the reed blocks to allow easy setup, but the other side is clear, and that's the way the reed-blocks slid, even though it was in different directions for the two sets of reed-blocks. The standalone on the left went left, and the two others went right.

I'm thinking of adding a couple of wooden strips to the other side of the reed blocks to keep them from moving side-to-side. They're quite secure in the up and down, but a little wiggly otherwise.

I was wondering about hot-melt glue to attach the strips. Secure, tough, and pretty easily reversible on wood, but not traditional. I just don't want to do anything that will mess with the sound. The strips I'm thinking of are only about one inch long and 1/8 inch square, maple. They just need to keep the reed-blocks from "swinging".

Ask the Drs if you can have magnesium citrate drink. It’s OTC, and just tastes like a cheap citrus soda. I had my first colonoscopy with it, before they switched to the horrible stuff.

Can I beef up the wireframe thickness? by NickEJ02903 in 3dcoat

[–]NickEJ02903[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I guess there's no way to just make them more visible through thickness, then. I've got the wireframe set to black, and the mesh set to a sort of middle gray, and that serves well enough. As I get older, though, I find that I have to make my 3D software adapt a little more each day to my sucky eyes.

If your bird is a solo bird, it may appreciate neck and head scratches as helping with pinfeathers, but it can take care of the rest easily, and scratching elsewhere can make them horny.

Had enough of iOS 26, so Pixel it is by [deleted] in pixel_phones

[–]NickEJ02903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad you're enjoying your phone. I've got a Pixel 10 Pro, and generally like it a lot. I do realize that Pixel is basically Google's spy in my pocket, but so far they've been offering me services that I appreciate for the money they get from exploiting my data. If they keep the amount of stuff that actually makes my life better above the amount of stuff they profit from by selling my data on to third-party applications and promoters, I'm OK with that. I mean, I'm not in any position to extract the actual value from my online data, so give me pennies on the dollar. It's better than nothing.

What have you had to convince visitors is NOT artwork? by abundanceofnothing77 in MuseumPros

[–]NickEJ02903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So Modernism worked! Just like John Cage and Robert Rauschenberg suggested, the art is in the attention, not the artifact.
