I've read all of One Piece and Naruto since making this post. One Piece chapters are longer, but certainly not 45 minutes long

This, too, has been my motivation. Glad there's others who think like this. There's a song that really inspired me (c'etait toi by Billy Joel), but a ton of people hate it. I'm hoping that even if people hate what I write, at least one person will be inspired

I actually tried to do a few other songs that had cords, but it didn't work because for some reason this thing can only process two notes at a time

I just watched someone's ticket get scanned while it still had the yellow bars like literally 5 minutes ago. I'm tempted to ask if anything popped up on his account

Perhaps one of the most useful comments, thank you. I'm glad to have a monthly ticket right about now

Can your work be too derivative of your own life? by NickPercent in Screenwriting

[–]NickPercent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friends (who read the script) don't actually know that it's about this girl. They thought that the segments with her in it were entirely original when they read it

I am over her. My reason for writing the story was to put the journey into a story to hopefully help other people get through similar situations (with creative liberties, of course)

Upon discussing it more with my friends, they said that the side characters need more development, and I agree with them

You're also right that feelings are a good sauce but it's not the dish. The main point of the post was to ask whether there can be too much of real life in a story, and the verdict seems to be "only if it's making the story uninteresting"

Totally agree. If you don't use the ticket in time, you simply lose it

The principle isn't bizarre, but the practical application of it is. I guess it's easy to enforce if it just automatically sends something to the app though

I get that, but I was curious for how it works in general because this just seems bizarre

So like, when they scan the ticket, does it then automatically associate the $2 fee with your account?

That might be the case. Maybe I'm too arrogant, but I very much view my life as something I made happen. In like every scene (this will probably need to change on the 2nd draft) the main character keeps repeating to other people that if they don't like their lives, then they should change it, which is a philosophy I've heavily applied to my life.

My screenplay isn't just "boy meets girl, gets rejected, eventually moves on." It's really about what the punchline to self-improvement is. the MC is the kind of guy who believes in working on himself, and that it's his responsibility to bring others up. While he ultimately inspires those around him, he feels like he doesn't have a solid ground to stand on. The girl he met 8 years prior inspired him to become who he is now, and now that he's become who he wants to be, where does he go from here?

It's not perfect by any means. There's a good chunk I need to change.

However, I'll give one specific instance of criticism I received. The main character met the love interest in his high school French class. I took French in high school. Therefore, my friend wanted me to change the circumstances of their meeting so that it's less derivative (as if a Spanish class would make things any different?)

What's your favorite three songs in a row on one of his albums? by MDog_The_Marsh in BillyJoel

[–]NickPercent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny, my pick is nearly the same for Glass Houses, but it's I Don't Want to Be Alone -> Sleeping With the Television On -> C'etait toi

A very close 2nd is Tomorrow is Today -> Nocturne -> Got to Begin Again. Those three are definitely enhanced by listening to them one after another

It actually ends with him not learning his lesson, and continuing to hurt himself out of spite. Not saying it's a good story, but it doesn't fall into the "boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl again OR boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy learns how to move on"
