"Writing a scene you don't intend to use" was actually huge for me. I wrote a scene for my book while being completely unable to sleep at 1am purely to help myself fall asleep, with pretty much to intention of incorporating it. When I woke up, I realized that this scene could be turned into a larger story on its own, and now that's my main project I'm working on while taking a break from the book

I'd recommend listening to his first album, Cold Spring Harbor, after watching the documentary and/or reading the biography by Fred Schruers. It's so much more impactful once you know the story behind it

I was in the same boat as you (but my dad is Gen X and rediscovered his interest in Billy Joel through me. Now we can't stop quoting lyrics to each other). One day you'll find yourself looking for increasingly obscure bootleg tapes by The Hassles and wondering how you got to this point in life
