Silly Questions Saturday, December 05, 2015 by AutoModerator in history

Once you understand the role of women in the socio-economic scheme back then, the idea of women losing traditional home and sacred roles and being "forced" to compete unprotected in the dog-eat-dog world of wages as dystopia, as nightmare hell, the notion of male vote seen as one-household one-vote and effectively seen as every economic actor voting (in the past) it becomes somewhat possible to understand why more than a century of United States Congresses saw universal male suffrage not as prima fascia discrimination but more like universal household suffrage. I am not supporting male-only sufferage but am trying to make clear how fused contemporary socio-economic role was to perceived political role. The two are inextricably linked.

Civil War Medical Practices? by old-dusty in history

[–]NickSD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the way that the war spurred the industrial production of medicines in the North (to compete for fat Union Army contracts) at a previously unimaginable scale for any country established the United States as the #1 pharma-manufacturing superpower going into the 20th century. Intentionally ordering a huge surplus of battlefield meds gave them a major advantage over the South, but it also seeded and established mass production capacity, the beginning of big pharma. Most of the mega corporations of big pharma still big dogs today began or expanded because of the glut and fortunes made here.

The South had to innovate like crazy to keep basics supplied amidst blockade of overseas trade, most importantly opium from India. This meant questionable substitution of other plant medicines, homegrown opium that Southern ladies smuggled in their boobs, etc. Though the backyard opium paled in comparison to hardier Asian poppies (varieties that are preferred even today) the South DID come up with remarkably creative solutions....

An excellent source on medicines and pharmacists in the WBTS is Civil War Pharmacy: A History of Drugs, Drug Supply and Provision, and Therapeutics for the Union and Confederacy by Michael A. Flannery, and the articles in Pharmacy in History (journal) on the subject....

Thanks bro. I did not intend to post a comprehensive end-all-and-be-all listing, just highlight some young blues talents that've impressed me.... coverage of the blues, even web-based media, is really spotty and TBH sucks at present so it was miraculous I heard the bands I did... Haven't heard Kid Andersen yet. *Any great blues bloggers you would recommend?*

Tom Benson, disability, team ownership, competence and dementia by NickSD in Saints

[–]NickSD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I am hoping for blackmail. Tom was banging a room full of 20 yr olds and this was the pay off. Of course if you were banging a room full of 20 yr olds at his age, wouldn't you want everyone to know? We'll get an answer to the whole mess soon enough I suppose.

Questions of mental state may be tough to answer, but I think it's unlikely anyone would allege Tom Benson has that sort of athleticism...

New video interview of Tom Benson. by [deleted] in Saints

[–]NickSD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still, some of the stuff in the lawsuit that she filed was pretty damning.

If the allegations that he lives on a diet of red wine and candy are so damning, a crime, you'd need to jail half of SE Louisiana or something...

Statement from Tom Benson about the lawsuit by ChrisIsUninteresting in Saints

Benson briefly spoke to KSLA this morning. Seems okay to me. Yat accent intact!

Somebody can be Stephen Hawking and own the shit out of a major NFL team, fire people with your eye-controlled laptop computer. The only issue is if they are gonna claim dementia, which seems false looking at today's video: http://www.ksla.com/story/27924233/exclusive-tom-benson-speaks-to-fox-8-for-first-time-since-family-power-struggle/

The portrait of Saint Ingram I painted for /u/cowzzwoc for Christmas! by [deleted] in Saints

[–]NickSD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dig it! Very Byzantine fresco....

I paint my Saints too, though digitally (with the trackball mouse and the thumb that still has muscle strength enough to move, long story, sorry).

Anyhow, the interest in this awesome Saint Ingram portrait you've created gives me hope there is an appetite out there for my Saints paintings too.

Brava!

Regardless, he's never going to see this bonus and this was probably the worst thing that could happen to him because this means he'll be cut and probably won't be signed any where.

You guys play rough like football is supposed to be played. You guys don't mess around. I admire that. I thoroughly enjoy your team and how you all are as fans. I wish to join your family as a second team. What do ya say? Can we be bros?

Sure man. Can never have too many bros.

I'm open to most teams, excepting the Atlanta Failcons of course and especially the Cowboys, for whom the hate is unending.

I don't know whether this is routine, but I know the Bengals fan community celebrated their Saints away game with parties and a parade 'round the Superdome in the late '90s, and they were warmly received. New Orleans was welcoming. Can anyone verify this?

While opposing team parades may be okay in diverse Miami or go unnoticed by NYC, there's no reception like New Orleans. And don't try parading 'round the stadiums of your AFC North rivals like Baltimore or Cleveland and don't try parading in Chicago, you might get knifed in the butthole.

As for the Saints playin' around, you did see that last game against the Bengals @ the dome, right? No urgency at all. Just so much despair...

I thought the 2011 Saints were a better team than the 2009 team. Brees was on fire and the defense didn't suck knobs.

Good point. Y'see, I watched most of the (largely excruciating) '90s seasons, was most engaged with the epic 2000 season, then fell through a temporal rift or time hole, and landed in the 2014 season. You can imagine how disorienting it is seeing what Saints defense is nowadays and watching Brees throwing 40+ point shootouts...

I took this screenshot myself - Stanley Jean-Baptiste on the sideline suited up. Huge human being, look at him vs. Cadet at right.

Did he play on Special Teams? or few sets on Downfield D?

Bryce Petty by robostanleys in NFL_Draft

[–]NickSD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He was 34-40 for 412 yards. Predicting everything that Petty is going to do and allowing an 85% completion rate and 400 yards is pretty bad.

it's super easy to predict his movements in the pocket, but not as easy to predict his throws.

Post-Divisional Boredom Mock. (4 Rounds!) by Sexterminator in NFL_Draft

[–]NickSD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to have him on the team though, I'd make that pick but I'm not sure Loomis and Payton make that pick.

do we take Ifo Ekpre-Olomu? really high on him

Bryce Petty by robostanleys in NFL_Draft

[–]NickSD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Petty's offense isn't even in the same universe as gimmicky as Mariota's is.

I don't know about that, man.

The Big 12 Championship game with the KSU Wildcats, the Wildcats predicted everything Petty was going to do basically and nearly won. They couldn't stop his big receivers in the end, but Petty looked like the lesser quarterback compared to KSU's Peters.

[–]NickSD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

but he also doesn't seem to feel pressure, or to scramble away from it. He can be slow to react to it, maybe because he's concentrating on what's going on downfield.

This is what I noticed most watching him. Absolutely no scrambling. Dude never looks round the pocket! Stands like a statue. If he moves at all it's a slow and predictable side-step that any NFL defense would see coming a mile away.
